Martha mãe e Martha filha: Memorias de Martha (1899) e Maternidade (1925), de Julia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934)

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como objeto de estudo a primeira edição em livro do romance Memorias de Martha (1899), da escritora brasileira Julia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934), e pretende destacar a relação entre as duas personagens Martha, mãe e filha. Para refletir sobre a narração do maternar, no romance, fez-se o estudo do livro Maternidade (1925), da mesma escritora. O trabalho insere-se no campo da Crítica Literária Feminista e dialoga com estudos sobre autoria feminina, cânone literário, literatura em folhetim, resgate e pós-resgate de escritoras brasileiras do século XIX. A escolha de manter a ortografia original da obra e do nome da autora, conforme os registros históricos da época em que foi publicada, constitui decisão metodológica relevante, pois busca respeitar as condições materiais da publicação e, ao mesmo tempo, facilitar futuras pesquisas documentais em acervos digitais. A temática da maternidade, central neste estudo do romance, aparece em constante diálogo com vida e obra da escritora e é apresentada e discutida ao longo da dissertação.

Abstract: This dissertation examines the first book edition of the novel Memorias de Martha (1899), by the brazilian writer Julia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934), and seeks to highlight the relationship between the two characters named Martha, mother and daughter. To reflect on the narration of mothering in the novel, the study also considers Maternidade (1925), by the same author. The research is situated within the field of Feminist Literary Criticism and engages with studies on women?s authorship, the literary canon, serialized fiction, and the recovery and post-recovery of nineteenth-century Brazilian women writers. The decision to preserve the original spelling of the work and of the author?s name, according to historical records from the period of publication, is a relevant methodological choice, as it aims both to respect the material conditions of the text?s production and to facilitate future documentary research in digital archives. The theme of motherhood, central to this analysis of the novel, appears in constant dialogue with the author?s life and body of work, and is presented and discussed throughout the dissertation.
