Amartya Sen, a Teoria Política moldada pela prática, e suas consequências: a crítica aos excessos analíticos de Rawls e mais além

Abstract

A presente tese investiga a teoria política heterodoxa de Amartya Sen, em especial sua crítica ao institucionalismo transcendental, e suas consequências para a metodologia da filosofia política contemporânea. O trabalho examina a dicotomia entre dois modelos de teorização política: o modelo analítico-transcendental, exemplificado por John Rawls, que postula a necessidade da Teoria Ideal como precedente para a Teoria Não-Ideal; e o modelo comparativo pragmático, defendido por Sen, que privilegia a análise de possibilidades reais de realizações sociais e condições concretas de vida. Nossa investigação revela que as críticas de Sen ao modelo rawlsiano ? particularmente no que se refere aos problemas da factibilidade e da redundância ? apontam para deficiências substantivas no uso irrestrito de abstrações e idealizações nas teorias políticas contemporâneas. Este trabalho, assim, também defende a hipótese de que, à semelhança da indissociabilidade entre fatos e valores proposta por Putnam, a teoria ideal e a teoria não-ideal ? ou, respectivamente, as dimensões transcendental e comparativa de uma teoria política ? devem ser compreendidas como imbricadas e complementares. Contrapondo-se tanto à premissa rawlsiana de que a teoria ideal é condição necessária para a teoria não-ideal, quanto às teses de Sen, que minimizam o papel da dimensão transcendental/idealista das teorias, argumenta-se pela viabilidade de uma ?teoria conglomerada?, híbrida entre comparativo e o transcendental, como única alternativa substantiva para uma teoria política apropriadamente direcionada para a prática. A crítica à dicotomia rígida entre juízos comparativos e idealistas aproxima-se das objeções de Quine à distinção analítico-sintético e ao ?colapso fato-valor? em Putnam. Sustenta-se, assim, que a dimensão transcendental não constitui um domínio separado, mas a elevação da dimensão comparativa a maiores alçadas de generalidade, funcionando como expediente racional para resolução de conflitos políticos e ampliação da base informacional de juízos práticos. O trabalho conclui que, embora a Teoria Ideal constitua uma dimensão inevitável do exercício filosófico, ela não deve ser privilegiada metodologicamente, requerendo uma vigilância crítica constante. A tese defende a necessidade de um reequilíbrio entre abordagens analíticas e pragmáticas, fundamentando-se na premissa de que a validade teórica de qualquer teoria política é fundamentalmente determinada pela sua aplicabilidade prática. Finalmente, propõe-se que o modelo de Sen oferece as bases seminais para o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia pragmática e integrada de teoria política, moldada pela ? e voltada para a ? prática , que incorpora contribuições metodológicas das tradições filosóficas distintas sem privilegiar dogmaticamente uma única abordagem.

The present dissertation investigates Amartya Sen?s heterodox political theory, with particular emphasis on his critique of transcendental institutionalism and its implications for the methodology of contemporary political philosophy. The study examines the dichotomy between two models of political theorizing: the analytic?transcendental model, exemplified by John Rawls, which posits the necessity of Ideal Theory as a prerequisite for Non-Ideal Theory; and the pragmatic?comparative model advanced by Sen, which prioritizes the analysis of real possibilities for social achievement and concrete conditions of life. Our inquiry shows that Sen?s criticisms of the Rawlsian model?especially regarding the problems of feasibility and redundancy?highlight substantive deficiencies in the unrestricted use of abstraction and idealization in contemporary political theories. Accordingly, the thesis also advances the hypothesis that, analogously to the inseparability of facts and values proposed by Putnam, ideal theory and non-ideal theory?or, respectively, the transcendental and comparative dimensions of a political theory?should be understood as entangled and complementary. In opposition both to the Rawlsian premise that ideal theory is a necessary condition for non-ideal theory and to Sen?s theses that minimize its role, the study argues for the viability of a ?conglomerate theory,? hybridizing the comparative and the transcendental, as the only substantive alternative for a political theory properly oriented toward practice. The critique of the rigid dichotomy between comparative and idealistic judgments parallels Quine?s objections to the analytic?synthetic distinction and Putnam?s account of the ?fact?value collapse.? It is thus maintained that the transcendental dimension does not constitute a separate domain, but rather represents the elevation of the comparative dimension to higher levels of generality, functioning as a rational device for resolving political conflicts and expanding the informational basis of practical judgments. The thesis concludes that, although Ideal Theory constitutes an unavoidable dimension of philosophical inquiry, it should not be methodologically privileged and instead requires constant critical scrutiny. It defends the need for a rebalancing between analytic and pragmatic approaches, grounded in the premise that the theoretical validity of any political theory is fundamentally determined by its practical applicability. Finally, it proposes that Sen?s model provides the seminal foundations for the development of a pragmatic and integrated methodology of political theory?shaped by, and oriented toward, practice?that incorporates methodological contributions from distinct philosophical traditions without dogmatically privileging any single approach.
