Confluências do Capibaribe: a fábula em João Cabral de Melo Neto

Abstract

Esta pesquisa partiu da interrogação acerca dos procedimentos com os quais João Cabral de Melo Neto constrói uma visualidade própria às paisagens literárias que configura em seus poemas, particularmente fazendo uso do olhar e da voz na dimensão de objetos pulsionais. Dentro dessa orientação, elegemos os três poemas acerca do percurso do rio Capibaribe para uma leitura detalhada, na qual nos deparamos com a temática do homem pernambucano, seu modo de vida e morte, sua luta para permanecer e ter voz. A hipótese que formulei para a leitura do tríptico do Capibaribe ? O cão sem plumas, O rio e Morte e vida severina ? é que, juntos, compõem uma ?Fábula do Capibaribe?, na qual o tempo, a história e a memória são tanto objetos de reflexão quanto modos pelos quais a visualidade é criada e recriada no corpo dos poemas. Sendo assim, o Capibaribe é paisagem na qual confluem uma poética e uma ética, pois as lições transmitidas por João Cabral decorrem de uma justaposição entre as vidas narradas e o gesto de escritura, nele estando incluídos os estilos literários e a linguagem adotada. No decurso da investigação foi possível encontrar os momentos de passagem de um tempo ao outro da fábula em cada um dos poemas: a fusão entre o rio e o homem, em razão das privações de ambos, em O cão sem plumas, a partir da qual o homem fica mudo e o Capibaribe passa a narrar, em O rio, para finalmente o rio voltar ao silêncio, quando perde a fala no mar, e o homem Severino retoma sua voz e restaura às palavras o poder de nomeação. As torções no tempo, inclusive por uma narrativa a contrapelo da história, pensadas a partir da fábula como gênero narrativo, apresentam a memória como local no poema onde as coisas falam e as comunidades pervivem.

Abstract: This research began while questioning the procedures by which João Cabral de Melo Neto constructs a distinct visual quality within the literary landscapes he configures in his poems, particularly through the use of vision and the voice in the dimension of pulsional objects. Following this guideline, three poems were selected, concerning the course of the Capibaribe River for a detailed reading, in which we encounter the theme of the man from Pernambuco, his way of life and death, and his struggle to persist and have a voice. The hypothesis I formulated for reading the Capibaribe triptych ? O cão sem plumas (The Dog without Feathers, 1950), O rio (The River, 1954), and Morte e vida severina (Death and Life of a Severino, 1956) ? is that, together, they compose a ?Fable of the Capibaribe? in which time, history, and memory are not only objects of reflection, but and modes through which this distinct visual quality is created and recreated within the body of the poems. Thus, the Capibaribe is a landscape where a poetics and an ethics converge, once the lessons transmitted by João Cabral arise from a juxtaposition between the narrated lives and the gesture of writing, including the literary styles and the language adopted. Along the investigation process, it was possible to find the transition moments from one time to another of the fable in each of the poems: the fusion between the river and the man, due to the privations suffered by both, in O cão sem plumas, from which point the man becomes unable to speak, so the Capibaribe begins to narrate the story, in O rio, so the river finally return to silence, losing its voice at the sea, and the Severino man to reclaim his voice and restore words with the power of naming. The torsions in time, including those that go against the grain of history, conceived from the perspective of the fable as a narrative genre, they present memory as the place in the poem where things speak and communities persist (pervivere).
