Autopoiese e teleologia: desatando o nó górdio das atribuições funcionais em máquinas autopoiéticas

Abstract

A validade de categorias teleológicas no âmbito das ciências físicas é colocada sob suspeita desde a modernidade, mas ainda possui uma forte presença no âmbito das ciências biológicas, principalmente no que tange às atribuições funcionais, tema atualmente muito debatido entre os filósofos da biologia. Entretanto, a Teoria da Autopoiese ou Biologia do Conhecer, proposta pelos biólogos chilenos H. Maturana, F. Varela e J. Mpodozis, levanta questionamentos contundentes à validade científica do vocabulário teleológico nas ciências da vida, o que exige dos autores, porém, um perceptível esforço em depurar o vocabulário biológico de quaisquer conotações teleológicas. Através de uma revisão sistemática da teoria da autopoiese com vistas a explicitar as críticas que seus autores levantam contra a teleologia em geral, contrastamos esta postura com as várias formas de se compreender as categorias teleológicas ao longo da história da filosofia e, especialmente, com as mais influentes vozes no atual debate sobre atribuições funcionais: as perspectivas etiológica, sistemática e organizacional. Como resultado, percebemos que, não obstante as críticas levantadas tornem a teoria da autopoiese incomensurável com outras formas de admitir categorias teleológicas, o mesmo não ocorre em relação à perspectiva de Gustavo Caponi sobre atribuições funcionais: uma abordagem que desfaz circularidades conceituais viciosas, pauta o conceito de função na causalidade e propõe um vocabulário funcional unificado para todas as diversas ciências que o requeiram. Defendemos, pois, que é possível e desejável que equipemos a teoria da autopoiese com um vocabulário funcional alinhado ao proposto por Caponi e esboçamos uma proposta de reformulação de explicações alinhadas à biologia do conhecer, buscando contribuir tanto para o debate científico em geral quanto para a aplicabilidade deste marco teórico.

Abstract: The validity of teleological categories within the realm of physical sciences has been called into question since the modernity, but it still holds a strong presence in biological sciences, mainly regarding functional attributions, a topic currently much debated among philosophers of biology. However, the Theory of Autopoiesis or Biology of Cognition, proposed by Chilean biologists H. Maturana, F. Varela, and J. Mpodozis, raises compelling questions about the scientific validity of the teleological vocabulary in life sciences, which requires the authors to make a noticeable effort to depurate the biological vocabulary of any teleological connotations. Through a systematic review of the Theory of Autopoiesis aimed at elucidating the criticisms its authors raise against teleology in general, we contrast such a stance with the various ways of understanding teleological categories throughout the history of philosophy and, especially, with the most influential voices in the current debate regarding functional attributions: the etiological, systematic, and organizational perspectives. As a result, we see that, despite the criticisms raised making the theory of autopoiesis incommensurable with other forms of admitting teleological categories, this is not the case with Gustavo Caponi's perspective on functional attributions: an approach that eliminates vicious conceptual circularities, grounds the concept of function in causality, and proposes a unified functional vocabulary for all the various sciences that require one. We argue, therefore, that it is possible and desirable to equip the theory of autopoiesis with a functional vocabulary aligned with that proposed by Caponi and we outline a proposal for reformulating explanations aligned with the Biology of Cognition, seeking to contribute both to the scientific debate in general and to the applicability of this theoretical framework.
