Na aurora dos sportsmen: as inspirações e aspirações do Figueirense Foot-ball Club na década de sua fundação (1921-1929)

Abstract

Este trabalho possui como objetivo o estudo das inspirações que levaram ao surgimento do Figueirense Foot-ball Club, bem como a análise de como a instituição estava inserida nas dinâmicas e contradições vigentes na cidade durante sua primeira década de existência (1921- 1929), num período em que a vida em Florianópolis esteve profundamente influenciada pelas reformas urbanas e pelo advento do progresso técnico. O trabalho é composto por três eixos, que contribuem para entendimento final do Figueirense como uma expressão do advento da modernidade em Florianópolis. Esses eixos são compostos, respectivamente, pela: 1. Reconstituição histórica do bairro da Figueira, seu território de origem; 2. Compreensão das estratégias de ascensão social do associativismo negro em Florianópolis, que julgamos terem influenciado decisivamente na fundação do clube alvinegro; e 3. Compreensão do papel que o futebol cumpria na sociedade de classes do século XIX, e como ocorreu sua disseminação e impacto no Brasil. Nosso estudo tem como base os preceitos da História Social, e se edifica a partir da utilização de recortes de periódicos florianopolitanos – como O Estado e Republica – durante o quartel inicial do século XX. Para a análise dos discursos, utilizamos as reflexões da Teoria Crítica da Sociedade. Nossa hipótese central é que os membros fundadores do Figueirense Foot-Ball Club foram influenciados pela nova mentalidade moderna que chegava a Florianópolis nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Com isso, a nova agremiação foi utilizada como um meio para incorporar o prestígio que o foot-ball representava, elevando estes sujeitos ao status de sportsmen. Essa estratégia visava a ascensão social e permitiu que os membros superassem os estigmas negativos atribuídos pelas elites aos moradores da Figueira. Simultaneamente, o clube serviu como um trampolim para expandir as redes de sociabilidade entre eles e as elites locais e regionais, assim usufruindo do prestígio e da distinção inerentes a essa classe.

This work is composed of three interconnected axes, which contribute to the final understanding of Figueirense Foot-Ball Club as an expression of the advent of modernity in Florianópolis. These axes are, respectively: 1. The historical reconstitution of the Figueira neighborhood, its territory of origin; 2. The understanding of the social ascent strategies of Black Associativism movement in Florianópolis, which we believe decisively influenced the foundation of the black-and-white club; and 3. The understanding of the role that football played in 19th-century class society and how its dissemination and impact occurred in Brazil. Our study is based on the tenets of Social History and is built upon the utilization of excerpts from Florianópolis newspapers—such as O Estado and Republica—during the initial quarter of the 20th century. For the discourse analysis, we employ the reflections of the Critical Theory of Society. Our central hypothesis is that the founding members of the Figueirense Foot-Ball Club were influenced by the new modern mindset arriving in Florianópolis during the first decades of the 20th century. Consequently, the new association was used as a means to incorporate the prestige that foot-ball represented, elevating these individuals to the status of sportsmen. This strategy aimed at social ascent and allowed the members to overcome the negative stigmas attributed by the elites to the residents of Figueira neighborhood. Simultaneously, the club served as a springboard to expand their networks of sociability among themselves and the local and regional elites, thus benefiting from the prestige and distinction inherent to that class.
