Algal Turf Scrubbers (ATS) are ecological engineering systems that exploit the metabolism of filamentous algae attached to a substrate to purify contaminated water. They consist of inclined ramps covered with microtopographies that favor algal attachment, through which wastewater is pumped, returning to the water body by gravity. In the present study, a pilot-scale ATS (4.6 m x 0.49 m) was installed on the shore of a eutrophic lake located in an natural park in the city of Florianópolis, SC, Brazil. The objectives were: (a) to verify the succession of algae in the ATS and compare it with those occurring in the lake; (b) to evaluate the ability of the ATS to remove nutrients (N, P) from the lake waters after maturation. For this purpose, the system and the lake were monitored weekly for 6 months regarding algae composition and physicochemical variables. After maturation of the ATS, a short-term experiment was carried out to test the nutrient removal capacity. The results showed that the algal composition in the ATS is largely different from that present in the lake. Some algae from the lake act as precursors of filamentous algae, producing biofilms for their settlement. The succession in the ATS culminated with filamentous green algae (Oedogonium and Ulothrix), which were not detected in the lake. In the removal experiment, the total biomass in the ATS was 135 g. P removal was low because due to external interference such as bird droppings, high water temperature and presence of micro grazers probably discharging waste matter in the water. As for N (nitrate), removals ranged from 0 to 74% after the water passed through the system (30 to 40 seconds). Although the algae grown are not very robust and have a low metabolism, the system showed potential to reduce the nutrient load of the lake if properly dimensioned. |
