Trajetórias de famílias negras da cidade de Caxias do Sul: encontros a partir de fotografias de acervo e objetos de afeto

Abstract

Esta dissertação investiga a trajetória de famílias negras em Caxias do Sul (RS) a partir de uma pesquisa etnográfica centrada em fotografias de acervos institucionais e familiares. O trabalho busca compreender como se constrói a memória visual da cidade, historicamente moldada pela colonização do imaginário social. Revela a presença de vestígios visuais da população negra dentro de instituições responsáveis pela salvaguarda da memória local. A partir de narrativas despertadas pelos acervos familiares, são compartilhadas histórias de vida e objetos de afeto que tensionam e complexificam representações recorrentes sobre as trajetórias negras ? muitas vezes reduzidas a perspectivas homogêneas ligadas ao êxodo rural ou a migrações afro-atlânticas fixadas em outros tempos. Utilizando imagens coletadas em campo, através da técnica da colagem surgem contranarrativas visuais que reconfiguram os modos de ver e lembrar. Trata-se de fabular com os fragmentos, de reinscrever presenças no corpo da cidade e de afirmar, pela imagem, a pluralidade das existências negras no sul do Brasil.

Abstract: This dissertation investigates the trajectories of Black families in Caxias do Sul (RS) through an ethnographic research approach centered on photographs from institutional and family archives. The study seeks to understand how the city?s visual memory has been constructed? historically shaped by the colonization of the social imaginary. It reveals the presence of visual traces of the Black population within institutions responsible for safeguarding local memory. From the narratives evoked by family archives, life stories and objects of affection are shared, challenging and complicating recurring representations of Black experiences? often reduced to homogeneous perspectives tied to rural exodus or Afro-Atlantic migrations fixed in distant pasts. Using images collected in the field, the technique of collage is employed to generate visual counter-narratives that reconfigure ways of seeing and remembering. It is a matter of fabulating with fragments, of reinscribing presences into the fabric of the city, and of affirming?through images?the plurality of Black existences in southern Brazil.
