Author: Velarde, Sofia Amelunge
Creating imperceptible dental restorations is one of the biggest challenges in restorative dentistry. Choosing a material that mimics dental structures is essential to achieving a satisfactory aesthetic result. The aim of this study was to evaluate the fluorescence of 13 brands of composite resins through photographic analysis under ultraviolet light. Three specimens measuring 5.0 mm in diameter and 2.0 mm in height were made for each composite resin and digitally analyzed in Adobe Photoshop software using the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color scale. Three dental enamel discs with the same diameter and height were obtained from the dental surface of bovine upper incisors (control group). The “B” (blue) value was specifically used to evaluate the fluorescence of each specimen, where the higher the value, the greater the fluorescence. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test (α=0.05). The composite resins showed a significant difference in mean fluorescence levels (p=0.0001). Filtek Easy Match (Solventum) and Filtek Z250 (Solventum) exhibited the lowest fluorescence means (respectively, 113,3 ± 5,03 and 114,6 ± 8,08). Meanwhile, Vittra Unique (FGM) and Charisma Classic (Heraeus Kulzer) presented the highest means (respectively, 197,3 ± 5,03 e 197 ± 6,24), close to the control group (211.3 ± 10.82). Based on the results, the size and distribution of the fillers are not enough to predict whether the material will exhibit fluorescence similar to dental enamel.
