The present study evaluated the influence of different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite on the accuracy of an Electronic Apex Locator (EAL) when coupled with an endodontic motor in its Auto Reverse Automatic (ARA) function. Human single-rooted teeth (n = 50) with straight canals were used, distributed into 5 groups (n=10): 1 control group (0.9% NaCl) and 4 experimental groups. After access preparation, the Real Length of the tooth (CR1) was determined using direct visual method, by inserting an FF #15 file until its tip was seen at the apical foramen. The CR1 was confirmed using a digital caliper after adjusting the cursor to the reference edge. Subsequently, specimens were set in alginate molds. For obtaining the initial Electronic Length (CE1), specimens were irrigated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solutions at different concentrations – 1%, 2.5%, 5%, and 8% – and one group using 0.9% NaCl (control), while an FF #15 file was inserted into the canal coupled to the EAL. Canals were prepared with ProTaper Universal system up to F3 instrument, attached to the endodontic motor set to ARA function and apical limit 0.0. At the moment of rotation reversal, the F3 instrument cursor was adjusted to the reference edge, and its length was measured (CE2). Canals were irrigated again with the respective NaOCl concentration, and new electronic (CE3) and manual with a guta-percha cone (CGF3) measurements were taken with the F3 file. Final CR (CR2) and CE (CE4) measurements were performed using an FF #15 file, along with the time required for EAL stabilization. Statistical analysis was conducted with a significance level set at 5%. Following tests for homogeneity and normality, ANOVA, Bonferroni and Tukey statistical tests were applied. Regardless of the irrigant concentration used, there was no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) in the comparisons between different stages, nor was there an influence of different concentrations on stabilization time. The average time for EAL stabilization was similar between the groups (p > 0,05). In conclusion, the different NaOCl concentrations did not affect the accuracy of the automatic reverse function of endodontic motors, nor their function as electronic apex locators and stabilization time. |
