O Caribe entre leis e fronteiras étnicas: a escravidão de indígenas e africanos na Ilha de Española, 1492-1551

Abstract

A presente dissertação se debruça sobre a fase inicial do colonialismo Atlântico, concentrando-se na ilha de Española no período situado entre 1492 e 1551. Mais objetivamente, investiga de forma relacional os impactos da escravidão sobre os indígenas e africanos, bem como as diferentes formas pelas quais esses sujeitos históricos interagiram, contestaram e moldaram sua realidade nos marcos iniciais da conquista e da colonização do continente. Assim, a pesquisa se dispõe a realizar uma análise da exploração escravista e da resistência à colonização, conectando as histórias indígenas e afro-americanas, com destaque para o caso da rebelião liderada pelo cacique Enrique de 1519 a 1533. Esse episódio não só é um marco de resistência, como permite explorar o feitio das relações étnico-raciais e as contraofensivas do governo colonial.

Abstract: This dissertation examines the initial phase of Atlantic colonialism, focusing on the island of Española in the period between 1492 and 1551. Specifically, it investigates in a relational waythe impacts of slavery on indigenous and Africans groups. It inquires as well the different formsthrough which these historical subjects interacted, contested and shaped their reality in the initial milestones of the continent?s conquest and colonization. Thus, the research intends to carry out an analysis of slave exploitation and resistance to colonization, connecting indigenousand Afro-American histories, with emphasis on the case of the rebellion led by cacique Enriquefrom 1519 to 1533. Not only is this episode a landmark of resistance, but it also allows to explore the shape of ethnic-racial relations and the counter-offensives of the colonial government.
