Tomato’s flowering is autonomously regulated through the action of specific genes. In
order to investigate the genetic interactions between jointless-2 (j-2) and single flower
truss (sft) mutants in the regulation of flowering and inflorescence development of
tomato, single and double mutants were produced and characterized in the given
background ( sp) from cv. Micro-Tom. The j-2 mutant did not show the formation of the
abscission zone of the flower pedicel. Furthermore j-2 did not affect plant or
inflorescence architecture. In the sft mutant, there is a delay in flowering and the
inflorescences produced were reduced to isolated flowers or show reversion to
vegetative growth after the production of a few flowers. The analysis of the double
mutant sft/j-2 revealed that there is epistasis of sft over j-2 for flowering time,
inflorescence architecture and plant architecture, characterized by delayed flowering,
production of inflorescences with the presence of leaves and production of lateral
shoots. In addition, the double mutant suggests that there is additive genetic interaction
in the formation of the first reproductive structure, with the presence of an isolated
flower, without abscission zone of the flower pedicel and with at least one leaf-shaped
sepal. Collectively these results suggest that j-2 is not required to promote flowering
induction in tomato, however, sft is essential for the normal regulation of this process. |
