O espaço urbano de Pelotas segundo suas narrativas audiovisuais

Abstract

Inseridas no contexto atual de comunicação predominantemente visual, as representações construídas nos filmes realizados na e sobre a cidade, integram a formação, experiência e percepção do espaço urbano em suas diferentes dimensões. Esta investigação se desenvolve a partir desse entendimento, e propõe o estudo de Pelotas no Rio Grande do Sul a partir de narrativas audiovisuais selecionadas, realizadas na cidade entre os anos de 1913 e 2016 por diferentes iniciativas: cinema local, cinema não local, cinema universitário e publicidade. Buscou-se revelar quais elementos e aspectos do espaço urbano são contemplados nos filmes considerados, e se eles reforçam ou não as imagens de referências já sedimentadas sobre a cidade, relacionadas às charqueadas e ao patrimônio edificado na área central. A partir do mapeamento das locações e análises dos filmes foi possível observar que as edificações construídas no período de maior desenvolvimento de Pelotas, entre o final do século XIX e início do século XX, são recorrentes, mas utilizadas com diferentes propósitos narrativos. Também foi possível notar que o centro, sobretudo a praça Cel. Pedro Osório e seu entorno, constitui o principal espaço de referência na maior parte filmes realizados por aqueles que vivem na cidade, enquanto o espaço das charqueadas é proeminente nos filmes em que os realizadores não locais utilizam a cidade como locação. Notou-se ainda uma certa tendência que difere na significação atribuída à cidade quando se trata das narrativas daqueles que nela vivem e daqueles que a utilizam como locação para seus filmes. Enquanto no primeiro caso, uma série de interfaces físicas e sociais é contemplada e o passado evocado de forma nostálgica, neutra ou mesmo contrastante, no último há uma tendência em contemplar apenas viés histórico, o passado da cidade.

Abstract : Within the current context of predominantly visual communication, the filmic representations made in and about the city, constitute the form, experience and perception of the urban space in its diverse dimensions. This present investigation sprouts from this understanding, and it proposes a study of Pelotas Rio Grande do Sul from the stand point of some select audiovisual narratives, produced and shot in the city within the years of 1912 through 2016 by multiple distinct initiatives: local cinema, non-local cinema, university films and advertising films. It aimed to reveal which aspects and elements of the urban scape were depicted in the selected films, moreover, do they reinforce or oppose the crystalised official image of the city, linked to the jerk-meat industry days and to the historical buildings erected in that era within the central area of the city. Stemming from the mapping of the locations and the analysis of these films, it was possible to observe that the buildings from the late 19th century and early 20th century are the most recurring, yet serving many distinct narrative roles. It was also notable how the central area, in special the surrounding of the Cel. Pedro Osorio square constitute the single most referenced space in the majority of the films made by inhabitants of the city, while the old jerk-meat farms, in the outskirts of the urban area, were more explored as location by the non-local filmic productions. It's possible to note a trend which differentiates the meaning attributed to the city from the narrative of those living in it from those who solely use its urban scape as location. While the former contemplates a bigger physical interface and a denser social fabric, evoquing the past in a neutral or even contrasting nostalgic manner, the latter contemplates only the historical bias, the canonical past of the city.
