Estimativa de estatura através de métodos odontológicos – uma revisão da literatura

Abstract

A antropologia forense e a odontologia legal são capazes de estimar características de um indivíduo não identificado, como estatura, sexo, idade e ancestralidade, que são informações pilares que auxiliam o processo de identificação humana. No que tange à estimativa de estatura, alguns métodos se mostram mais eficazes do que outros. Este trabalho teve por objetivo realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre os métodos antropométricos e odontológicos, para a estimativa da estatura no processo de identificação humana. Para tanto, foi realizado um levantamento da literatura científica por meio de uma busca de livros e artigos científicos nas bases de dados PubMed (United States National Library of Medicine (NLM)), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). As palavras-chave utilizadas para o levantamento dos dados foram “forensic odontology”, “odontologia forense”, “forensic anthropology”, “antropologia forense", "anthropology", “antropologia”, “teeth” e “dentes”, incluindo publicações nas línguas portuguesa e inglesa, inicialmente sem limitação de tempo. A análise da literatura científica permitiu perceber que o método mais analisado nos estudos e com resultados mais promissores é o proposto por Carrea e suas modificações, como o modificado por Cavalcanti. Conclui-se que a estimativa de estatura é um método complementar no processo de identificação. Métodos odontológicos de estimativa de estatura que utilizam a análise de dentes durante esse processo são importantes, principalmente em casos em que não há a presença de esqueleto completo.

Forensic anthropology and forensic dentistry are able to estimate characteristics of an unidentified individual, such as height, sex, age and ancestry, which are pillar information that help the process of human identification. With regard to height estimation, some methods are more effective than others. This study aimed to review the literature on anthropometric and dental methods for estimating height in the process of human identification. Therefore, a survey of the scientific literature was carried out through a search of books and scientific articles in the databases PubMed (United States National Library of Medicine (NLM)), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). The keywords used for data collection were “forensic dentistry”, “forensic dentistry”, “forensic anthropology”, “forensic anthropology”, “anthropology”, “anthropology”, “teeth” and “teeth”, including publications in the Portuguese and English languages, initially without time limitation. The analysis of the scientific literature showed that the method most analyzed in the studies and with the most promising results is the one proposed by Carrea and its modifications, such as the one modified by Cavalcanti. Height estimation is a complementary method in the identification process. Dental height estimation methods that use the analysis of teeth during this process are important, especially in cases where a complete skeleton is not present.
