Militarização da fronteira meridional: as forças terrestres em Santa Catarina (de fins do séc. XVIII ao início do Segundo Reinado)

Abstract

Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar o contexto político-militar da província de Santa Catarina, desde o final do século XVIII até o início do Segundo Reinado. A tese defendida é a de que a tensão entre os diversos tipos de fronteira moldou as atividades bélicas na província, do que dependeu em grande medida a estruturação do aparato político-militar nos primeiros anos do Império. Partindo desta premissa, percebeu-se a existência de diversas lógicas fronteiriças na área em estudo, que antes de serem excludentes, resultavam na dinâmica específica da província. Neste sentido, diversos atores sociais agiram como representantes do governo que se estruturava ou se utilizavam das oportunidades trazidas pelos conflitos para buscarem melhores condições de vida. A dificuldade em se manter um padrão de recrutamento se mesclou com a manutenção de características não-profissionais das forças armadas, refletindo as particularidades da sociedade. Percebe-se, assim, que não é possível tratar o tema da militarização de forma coesa para todo o Império, pois características regionais e locais, a exemplo da constante tensão com os grupos indígenas no caso catarinense, influenciavam a organização e a forma de se utilizar estas forças. Como fontes, são utilizados ofícios trocados entre as autoridades responsáveis pela organização das forças de 1ª e 2ª linhas - tanto em nível provincial quanto os que eram trocados com as autoridades imperiais -, bem como relatórios provinciais, leis imperiais e provinciais, memórias, e outros documentos oficiais e oficiosos que permitiram alicerçar a pesquisa a partir dos pressupostos da História Militar.

Abstract: This research aims to analyze the political-military context of the province of Santa Catarina, from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the Second Reign. The most general idea defended is that the tension between the different types of frontiers shaped the military activities in the Province, on which the structuring of the political-military apparatus in the first years of the Empire depended to a great extent. Starting from this premise, it was noticed the existence of several frontier logics in the area under study, which, before being exclusives, resulted in the specific dynamics of the province. In this sense, several social actors acted as representatives of the government that was structuring itself or taking advantage of the opportunities brought by conflicts to seek better living conditions. The difficulty in maintaining a recruitment pattern mixed with the maintenance of non-professional features of the armed forces, reflecting the particularities of the society. Thus, we can notice that it is not possible to deal with the issue of militarization in a cohesive way for the entire Empire, as regional and local characteristics, such as the constant tension with indigenous groups in the case of Santa Catarina, influenced the organization and the way in which these forces were used. As sources, I used letters exchanged between the authorities responsible for organizing the 1st and 2nd line forces - both at the provincial level and those exchanged with the imperial authorities -, as well as provincial reports, imperial and provincial laws, memoirs, and others official and unofficial documents that allowed the research to be based on the assumptions of Military History.
