"Considerai se é isto um homem": uma leitura de Primo Levi

Abstract

Esta dissertação se concentra no estudo da produção literária do escritor italiano Primo Levi (1919-1987). O objetivo deste trabalho é propor algumas discussões partindo da leitura de seu primeiro livro, É isto um homem?, contemplando também outros de seus escritos, como entrevistas, outros romances e seus poemas. O primeiro deles, publicado em 1947, é pensado na contemporaneidade, dentro da literatura de testemunho, sendo Levi uma das grandes vozes que falou sobre os processos de desumanização do homem em Auschwitz. Entretanto, com este trabalho, pretende-se apresentar outros caminhos de leitura. Em um primeiro momento, são expostas perspectivas sobre a tradução e a relação de Levi com o escritor Franz Kafka, contribuindo para uma leitura mais ampla e, ao mesmo tempo, mais aprofundada da obra primoleviana. Em seguida, busca-se pensar outras relações, entre língua, música e poesia, por meio da leitura e análise de O canto de Ulisses, um dos capítulos de É isto um homem?. É através da figura grega, recuperada por Levi ao recordar o Canto XXVI do Inferno, da Divina Comédia de Dante Alighieri, que a realidade do campo de concentração parece, ao longo da caminhada com o companheiro de prisão Pikolo, ter um momento de suspensão. Abre-se então uma possibilidade de afeto dentro de um espaço pouco acolhedor e que só é possível pelo gesto pensado no primeiro capítulo: o gesto tradutório. Por fim, no capítulo final, a pergunta da obra de 1947 é recolocada a partir de um plano que não deixa de ecoar a experiência do Lager, mas que se abre para outras percepções da relação com os mundos animal e vegetal. Isto é, propõe-se uma leitura crítica de alguns poemas para questionar as diferentes formas de vida que são necessárias à vida própria do ser humano. Nesse sentido, pensa-se não mais em uma rede de relações hierarquizadas (a partir de uma perspectiva antropocêntrica), mas em uma articulada trama, constituída pela pluralidade das formas de vida, cuja existência coloca em crise o antropocentrismo.

Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the study of the literary productions of the Italian writer Primo Levi (1919-1987). The objective of this dissertation is to propose some discussions starting from the reading of his first book If this is a man, contemplating other writings of his, such as interviews, others novels and his poems. The first one published in 1947 is thought of in contemporary times within the testimony literature, Levi being one of the great voices who spoke about the processes of dehumanization of man in Auschwitz. However, this dissertation intends to present other ways of interpreting his work. At first, perspectives on Levi's translation and relationship with the writer Franz Kafka are exposed contributing to a broader and deeper reading at the same time of the primolevian work. Then, it seeks to think about other relationships among language, music and poetry through the reading and analysis of ?The canto of Ulysses?, one of the chapters in If this is a man. It is through the Greek figure recovered by Levi when recalling Dante Alighieri's Canto XXVI from Inferno of the Divine comedy that the reality of the concentration camp seems to have a moment of suspension during the walk with fellow prisoner Pikolo. It opens then, a possibility of affection within a space that is not very welcoming, and that is only possible through the gesture thought in the first chapter: the translational gesture. Finally, in the final chapter, the question of the 1947 work is reinstated from a place that still echoes Lager's experience, but which opens up to other perceptions of the relationship with the animal and plant worlds. That is, a critical reading of some poems is proposed in order to question how different forms of life are necessary for human being's own life. In this sense, one no longer thinks of a network of hierarchical relationships (from an anthropocentric perspective), but of an articulated plot based on the plurality of life forms, whose existence puts the anthropocentrism in crisis.
