do Brasil neste período.
As variáveis
lactantes. |

Breastfeeding is essential for human growth and development in the first years of life and its
practice is increasing, but still below expectations, it is important to know the factors that can
promote it. The aim of the study was to analyze the prevalence of breastfeeding at 3 months
and facilitators of its practice, reported by mothers who had their children in a child-friendly
hospital. This study was derived from a more comprehensive longitudinal research project,
being carried out between 12/30/2014 and 10/01/2018, with 2696 mothers who had their
children at a Baby-Friendly Hospital in southern Brazil during this period. Participants were
interviewed in person in rooming-in (AC) and by telephone after three, six, twelve and
twenty-four months. Variables included closed and open questions with maternal
sociodemographic data, newborn data and breastfeeding (BF) data. In this study, some contact
data at 3 months and breastfeeding facilitators up to 3 months reported by the mothers are
presented. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and reports were
categorized and subsequently quantified. Results: 2054 mothers were contacted after 3
months of the AC interview, of which 1795 (66.6%) were breastfeeding their children, 1523
(56.5%) in exclusive breastfeeding (EB), 42 (1.65%) in predominant breastfeeding and 227
(8.4%) in complementary breastfeeding, it was not possible to identify whether BF was
exclusive or not among 4 mothers. The most frequently cited facilitator of breastfeeding was
the infant's health (27.6%), followed by having knowledge about the importance of BF (8.3%)
by mothers in EBF. The mother-child bond was frequently mentioned by mothers who were
in EBF (8.2%) and predominant breastfeeding (16.9%) and maternal satisfaction in
breastfeeding (10.2%) by those who were in predominant breastfeeding. Among mothers who
were in complementary breastfeeding, maternal satisfaction (6.2%) and having been guided
by professionals about the practice (5.9%) were mentioned frequently. Other facilitators
mentioned were: having previous experience with breastfeeding, practicality, desire to
breastfeed, family support, use of silicone nipples and good child development. Conclusions:
The knowledge of the importance of breast milk for the child's health, the mother-child bond,
maternal satisfaction, as well as guidance and previous experience are facilitators of BF at 3
months. The findings highlight the importance of continuing to disseminate information and
about the advantages of breastfeeding for the population and guidance and support for
breastfeeding women. |
