Cultura de massa e recepção: os movimentos interpretativos de O mundo de gelo e fogo de George R. R. Martin

Abstract

A temática desta tese se desdobra no estudo do fenômeno de recepção e criação da saga literária de fantasia As Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo (A Song of Ice and Fire), do escritor norte-americano George R. R. Martin. Também, alguns apontamentos e considerações sobre a sua respectiva adaptação para a série televisiva: Game of Thrones, criada por David Benioff e D. B. Weiss, para a HBO. Nesta pesquisa, o foco se efetiva principalmente na relação dinâmica entre autor, obra e fruidor. Tradicionalmente, as narrativas são contadas por meio de diversas formas artísticas como, por exemplo, a literatura, a música, o teatro e o cinema. Muitas dessas narrativas, ao serem adaptadas, transitam entre um meio de comunicação para outro, intensificando a experiência de fruição. Assim sendo, faz-se uso do método comparativo para estabelecer relações entre os dois procedimentos artísticos, de forma que a literatura e a arte audiovisual televisiva são evidenciadas por meio da documentação indireta, envolvendo estudos bibliográficos. O aporte teórico parte precipuamente das reflexões do escritor e semiólogo italiano Umberto Eco, que realizou importantes estudos e reflexões sobre a comunicação em massa e interpretação da obra artística. Além disso, outros pontos de discussão contam com as preciosas contribuições de diversos estudiosos, apresentados ao longo do texto. Atualmente, entre outras produções artísticas, As Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo, bem como sua adaptação audiovisual, Game of Thrones, têm tido uma forte presença cultural. Por essa razão, o estudo desses objetos culturais e suas implicações se faz pertinente, pois se sintoniza com a atualidade da produção literária e cultural, em torno da Cultura de Massa, em especial, de parte da literatura mais lida em nível mundial hoje, assim como sua intersecção com as mídias em geral. Portanto, esta pesquisa trata de melhor compreender a \"literatura de massa\", enquanto fenômeno social, que, à revelia de repetidos prognósticos sobre o fim da literatura, faz-nos retornar à verificação do sentido da literatura atual, essencialmente, sob o aspecto crítico da recepção literária. Como resultado, espera-se contribuir para a fortuna crítica que visa compreender melhor o sucesso da literatura lida e consumida na atualidade.

Abstract: The theme of this thesis unfolds in the study of the phenomenon of reception and creation of the literary fantasy saga \"A Song of Ice and Fire\" by the American writer George R. R. Martin. Also, some notes and considerations about its respective adaptation for the television series: \"Game of Thrones\", created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, for HBO. In this research, the focus is mainly on the dynamic relationship among the author, the work and the reader (audience). Traditionally, narratives are told through various artistic forms, such as the literature, the music, the plays and the cinema. Many of these narratives, when adapted, move from one media to another, intensifying the enjoyment experience. Thus, the comparative method is used to establish relationships between the two artistic procedures, in a way that literature and television audiovisual art are evidenced through indirect documentation, involving bibliographic studies. The theoretical contribution comes mainly from the reflections of the Italian writer and semiologist Umberto Eco who has made important studies and reflections on the mass communication and interpretation of the artistic work. In addition, other points of discussion rely on the precious contributions of several scholars, presented throughout the text. Currently, among other artistic productions, \"A Song of Ice and Fire\", as well as its audiovisual adaptation, \"Game of Thrones\", have had a strong cultural presence. For this reason, the study of these cultural objects and their implications is pertinent, since it is in tune with the actuality of literary and cultural production, around mass culture, in particular, part of the most widely read literature in the world today, as well as its intersection with the media in general. Therefore, this research aims to better understand the ?mass literature?, as a social phenomenon, which, despite repeated predictions about the end of the literature, makes us return to the verification of the meaning of the current literature, essentially under the critical aspect of literary reception. As a result, it is expected to contribute to the critical fortune that aims to better understand the success of the literature read and consumed today.
