Indicações para o uso externo e efeitos terapêuticos da Malva sylvestris: Uma revisão integrativa

Abstract

Os benefícios terapêuticos do uso de plantas medicinais na odontologia podem vir a ser um grande apoio no tratamento de muitas doenças e condições bucais. A Malva sylvestris (MS) tem grande potencial, fácil acessibilidade, custo relativamente baixo e boa aceitação. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão integrativa da literatura para identificar as indicações de uso externo, os efeitos terapêuticos e os efeitos adversos da MS. Foram utilizadas as bases de dados PubMed, LILACS, SCOPUS e Web of Science. A seleção foi feita em duas etapas, a primeira feita pelo pesquisador principal (B. B. G.) através da leitura dos títulos e resumos. Na segunda etapa dois pesquisadores (B. B. G. e R. T. S.) leram na íntegra os artigos selecionados na primeira etapa e aplicaram os mesmos critérios de elegibilidade; em casos de discordância, um terceiro revisor (H.J.F.) foi consultado. Após a leitura do título e resumo, 24 artigos foram considerados elegíveis para leitura do texto completo, dos quais 09 foram excluídos por não atenderem aos critérios de elegibilidade. Após isto, 15 estudos foram incluídos na revisão. Dos 15 artigos, 4 (26,6%) eram estudos clínicos randomizados, 2 (13,3%) estudos clínicos controlados e 9 (60%) estudos experimentais. As indicações de usos foram lesões cirúrgicas em pele, edemas, queimaduras em pele, inflamação em pele, eczema de mão, mucosite oral, xerostomia, periodontite crônica, gengivite, melasma e lentigo senil. Em todas as condições, houve efeito positivo após o uso da MS, e não foram reportados efeitos adversos. A análise dos dados revelou grande potencial para uso terapêutico da MS na odontologia, porém o nível de evidência científica ainda é baixo e o desenvolvimento de novas pesquisas é essencial.

The therapeutic benefits of medicinal plants in dentistry can be a great support to treat many diseases and oral conditions. Malva sylvestris (MS) has great potential, and it is easily available, with relatively low cost and good acceptance. The objective of this work was to carry out an integrative literature review to identify the indications for external use, the therapeutic and adverse effects of MS. Researches were carried out in the PubMed, LILACS, SCOPUS and Web of Science databases. The selection was made in two stages – firstly the main researcher (B.B.G.) screened title and abstracts of all identified studies. In the second stage, two researchers (B. B. G. and R. T. S.) applied the same eligibility criteria to full-text articles; if a consensus was not achieved, the third reviewer was consulted (H.J.F.). The information obtained was tabulated and analyzed. As a result, 1057 articles were obtained after removing duplicates. After reading the title and abstract, 24 articles were considered eligible for reading the full text, of which 9 were excluded for not meeting the eligibility criteria. After that, 15 studies were included in the review. From the 15 articles, 4 (26.6%) were randomized clinical studies, 2 (13.3%) controlled clinical studies and 9 (60%) experimental studies. The indications of use were surgical skin lesions, edemas, skin burns, skin inflammation, hand eczema, oral mucositis, dry mouth, chronic periodontitis, gingivitis, melasma and senile lentigo. In all conditions, there was a positive effect after the use of MS, and no adverse effects were reported. Data analysis revealed great potential for therapeutic use of MS, but the level of scientific evidence is still low. It can be concluded with this work that MS has a wide variety of therapeutic properties that may come to collaborate with dentistry, however the development of new research is still essential.
