Ontogenia comportamental de filhotes de Baleia-Franca (Eubalaena australis) ao longo da temporada reprodutiva na APA da Baleia Franca em Santa Catarina, Brasil.

Abstract

Durante a temporada reprodutiva das baleias-franca-austral (Eubalaena australis) na APA da Baleia Franca em Santa Catarina, período de julho a novembro, foi observado que a maioria dos grupos que se encontram perto da costa são fêmeas com filhote. No decorrer da temporada as mudanças de comportamento dos filhotes estão relacionadas a idade, e seu nível de atividade e repertório comportamental podem alterar conforme ele adquire independência da mãe. Este estudo monitorou 257 filhotes de baleia-franca-austral entre os anos de 2016 a 2018, através do monitoramento terrestre em pontos fixos e focou nas mudanças comportamentais ao longo do desenvolvimento ontogenético dos filhotes durante a temporada reprodutiva. Em julho e agosto, início da temporada, os neonatos apresentaram comportamentos mais lentos decorrente da ineficiência motora e grande dependência da mãe; no mês de setembro os filhotes já apresentavam comportamentos ativos relacionados à brincadeira em consequência de seu desenvolvimento acelerado; em outubro, final da temporada e período pré migratório, notou-se comportamentos relacionados ao deslocamento, possivelmente ligados ao ganho de condicionamento físico para enfrentar a longa migração. A hipótese sobre as mudanças comportamentais dos filhotes de baleia-franca ao longo da temporada reprodutiva foram testadas ao avaliar as frequências dos estados e eventos comportamentais ao longo do desenvolvimento ontogenético dos filhotes de baleia-franca, que foram caracterizados através do monitoramento terrestre e que notavelmente diferem em intensidade (brincadeira, deslocamento e repouso). Este trabalho considera e afirma a necessidade se conhecer o repertório comportamental das baleias-franca-austral nas áreas de reprodução, a fim de garantir o manejo adequado de áreas protegidas e berçários como a APA da Baleia Franca. Distúrbios antropogênicos podem afetar o comportamento animal causando possíveis impactos no desenvolvimento ontogenético dos filhotes alterando em longo prazo, as áreas de ocorrência, distribuição e comportamento dos animais.

During the reproductive season of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) at the Right Whale APA in Santa Catarina, from july to november, it was observed that most of the groups that are close to the coast are females with calf. During the season, the behavioral changes of the calves are related to age, and their activity level and behavioral repertoire can change as he acquires independence from the mother. This study monitored 257 southern right whale chicks between the years 2016 to 2018, through terrestrial monitoring at fixed points and focused on behavioral changes throughout the baby's ontogenetic development during the reproductive season. In july and august, the beginning of the season, neonates showed slower behaviors due to motor inefficiency and great dependence on the mother; in september the calves already showed active behaviors related to play as a result of their accelerated development; in october, the end of the season and the pre-migratory period, displacement-related behaviors were noted, possibly linked to gaining physical fitness to face the long migration. The hypothesis about the behavioral changes of the right whale calves during the reproductive season were tested by evaluating the frequencies of behavioral states and events throughout the ontogenetic development of the right whale calves, which were characterized through terrestrial monitoring and which remarkably differ in intensity (play, displacement and rest). This work considers and affirms the need to know the behavioral repertoire of southern right whales in breeding areas, in order to guarantee the adequate management of protected areas and nurseries such as the Right Whale APA. Anthropogenic disorders can affect animal behavior causing possible impacts on the ontogenetic development of the calves, altering in the long term, the areas of occurrence, distribution and behavior of the animals.
