Finding out customer needs has always been one of the biggest challenges of marketing. Today, marketing has the assistance of technology to overcome that challenge. Through digital tools, companies like Facebook and Google are able to discover exactly what internet users are searching. From that search, algorithms of the Search Engine Marketing (SEM) make predictions and calculate the interests of those internet users, feeding them with the type of content that they are more familiar with. However, if the only content shown is the one that the internet users are familiar with, then those algorithms are causing the “filter bubble”, preventing the users from having contact with different political points of view. Consequently, this issue would be contributing to the generation of political extremism on society. Within this context, this article aims to describe how Search Engine Marketing can influence the political participation of internet users who were subjected to it. To meet that objective, quantitative research was carried out, by way of a questionnaire. The results suggest that SEM influences mainly internet users who are more convicted politically and the more convicted they are, the less they receive political content which they are not familiar with.
