In Brazil there is a great variety of types of bean produced, where each region presents a grain type characteristic consumed. Therefore, the challenge of bean breeding is to substitute existing cultivars for new superior cultivars. Thus bringing a new cultivation option for farmers, such as beans of color. Thus, the objective of the present work was to test the individual selection method with progeny test in a population of red kidney (Dark Red Kidney), to obtain superior genotypes. The present work was carried out under harvest conditions, during the years of 2015 and 2016, at the Agricultural Experimental Farm of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Curitibanos campus. The area used was under no-tillage management, the seed, which shows large and red grain type, typical of the Andean genus group "Dark Red Kidney" was acquired through the donation of a farmer. The method used for the proposed breeding strategy was the Individual Selection with Progeny Test method. With this, 31 progenies with the highest apparent production were chosen. The progenies and control were evaluated for the characteristics of one hundred grains, number of pods per plant and grain yield, in a randomized complete block design with three replications in plots of one line with two meters. The data were submitted to analysis of variance by the F test at the 5% probability level and the means were compared by the Scott Knott test at 5% probability. Based on the analysis of variance the components of phenotypic, genotypic and environmental variance were obtained. Three progenies stood out in the three evaluations of grain yield, one hundred grain mass and number of pods per plant, 9, 13 and 16, with the results for productivity 1716.96, 1371.66 and 1408,06 kg ha -1, respectively , and for mass of one hundred the results were 40.86, 47.63 and 41.86 g. Finally, the last evaluated characteristic, number of pods per plant, presented the following results, 8.3, 10.6 and 12.6 pods. The control group presented 435.70 kg ha-1, 33.45 g and 3.0 for the same characteristics evaluated. These results reflect the estimation of the selection gain, being 163.25% for the characteristic grain yield, 95.93% for the number of pods per plant and 25.30% for the mass of one hundred grains. It is concluded that the evaluated progenies were considered superior. Therefore, the method Individual selection with progeny test was efficient to improve the population of bean plants of the "Dark Red Kidney" type, because it was possible to extract from a population genotypes superior to the original population.
