Abstract: This thesis aims to explore the topology of the vaccine apparatus in Brazil, electing as its central analytical focus the period comprised between the outbreak of the Vaccine Revolt (1904) and the eradication of smallpox (1973). To this end, it articulates a Foucauldian archaeogenealogy with a new materialist perspective of discoursesâ in propositional alignment with Butturi Junior and Camozzatoâ , tensioning the concepts of biopolitics and governmentality with Karen Baradâ s agential realism, Donna Harawayâ s intra-actions and assemblages, and Bruno Latourâ s actant symmetry. Under this theoretical-methodological framework, the research excavates a heterogeneous archive, composed of historical photographs, immunization booklets, legislative proceedings, and periodicals, in order to analyze the agentivity that intertwines the human and the non-human, the State, and the instruments of cutaneous perforation. The central genealogical path describes how the vibrant materiality of the syringe and the lancet operated the transition from a scenario of violent ballistic coercion to the invention of a sanitary citizenship guided by docilization and populational care. Having established this historical arc of the stabilization of the vaccine machinery as a dense biopolitical black box, the investigation shifts its lens toward a prospective epilogue focused on the contemporary platformized landscape (1990-2026). This incursion delineates the corrosion of the immunitary pact in the face of the emergence of algorithmic governmentality, evidencing how the sociotechnical friction of digital networks fractured the collective commitment, culminating in the necropolitical asphyxiation orchestrated during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the filigrees of this cartography, the pointed material-discursive regularities attest that: the intra-action between the dermis and the needle materializes the very conformation of biocitizenship; viral eradication demanded the alignment of actants in distributed agency; the vaccine machinery, within cybernetic meshes, undergoes an ontological torsion that recodes the immunizer into a vector of moral and organic contamination; and the final tensioning reveals a paradox, in which the hesitation towards state syringes coexists with a vertiginous aesthetic adherence to biosynthetic weight-loss pens (GLP-1 agonists). It is concluded that the biopolitical apparatus, permeated by these frictions, demands uninterrupted negotiations from the State to govern life, attesting to the constant reconfiguration of material-discursive practices in the networks of capital. |
