Fotografia e confissão no Instagram: modos de produção da subjetividade contemporânea

Abstract

Esta tese investiga o que acontece com a produção de subjetividade quando pessoas comuns passam a publicar frequentemente fotografias de si mesmas e de suas vidas na plataforma de rede social Instagram. A pergunta que orienta o trabalho é: como a estrutura confessional se materializa nessas fotografias, com que traços e com que variações? Por estrutura confessional entende-se, na esteira de Michel Foucault, o arranjo em que alguém fala de si diante de um outro que escuta e avalia e, ao fazê-lo, vincula-se à identidade que enuncia. A hipótese de leitura é que, ao se mostrarem na plataforma, esses usuários se engajam em uma dinâmica confessional que tende a aproximá-los do sujeito neoliberal, o ?empresário de si mesmo?, que administra a própria vida como quem gere um capital. O estudo é qualitativo e interpretativo. O corpus reúne 60 fotografias e suas legendas extraídas de seis perfis de usuários brasileiros comuns, coletadas em fevereiro de 2025. A análise combina uma descrição semiótica das imagens com um instrumento construído para traduzir o conceito foucaultiano de confissão. Os resultados mostram fotografias que privilegiam o contato e o pertencimento e que confessam, antes de tudo, positividade e normalidade: famílias unidas, lazer, conquistas, felicidade. Diferentemente do confidente de Foucault, que admitia faltas e pecados, o usuário exibe conformidade à norma, inscrevendo-se em papéis consagrados, como o casal romântico e a família feliz. Essas escolhas não resultam de uma imposição direta, mas de uma maneira de fotografar partilhada e naturalizada na própria plataforma, que sugere discretamente o que mostrar e como mostrá-lo. Conclui-se que o Instagram opera, para esses usuários, como uma forma de pastorado difuso e parcialmente maquinal, que não coage diretamente, mas fornece a gramática dentro da qual o sujeito se enuncia e se constitui, criando as condições estruturais para a sedimentação de uma subjetividade orientada pela lógica neoliberal. Ressalte-se que a tese descreve condições estruturais, não a subjetivação efetivamente ocorrida nos usuários, reconhecendo, ainda, uma margem estreita, porém real, de resistência.

Abstract: This dissertation investigates what happens to the production of subjectivity when ordinary people begin to frequently publish photographs of themselves and of their lives on the social media platform Instagram. The question guiding the work is: how does the confessional structure materialize in these photographs, with what traits and what variations? Following Michel Foucault, confessional structure refers to the arrangement in which someone speaks about themselves before another who listens and evaluates and, in doing so, becomes bound to the identity they enunciate. The interpretative hypothesis is that, by displaying themselves on the platform, these users engage in a confessional dynamic that tends to bring them closer to the neoliberal subject, the ?entrepreneur of himself?, who manages his own life as one manages capital. The study is qualitative and interpretive. The corpus brings together 60 photographs and their captions, drawn from six profiles of ordinary Brazilian users and collected in February 2025. The analysis combines a semiotic description of the images with an instrument designed to translate Foucault's concept of confession. The findings reveal photographs that privilege contact and belonging and that confess, above all, positivity and normality: united families, leisure, achievements, happiness. Unlike Foucault's penitent, who admitted faults and sins, the user displays conformity to the norm, inscribing themselves in consecrated roles, such as the romantic couple and the happy family. These choices do not result from direct imposition but from a shared, naturalized way of photographing on the platform itself, which discreetly suggests what to show and how to show it. It is concluded that Instagram operates, for these users, as a form of diffuse and partly machinic pastorate that does not coerce directly but provides the grammar within which the subject enunciates and constitutes itself, creating the structural conditions for the sedimentation of a subjectivity oriented by neoliberal logic. It should be emphasized that the dissertation describes structural conditions, not the subjectivation effectively undergone by the users, while still acknowledging a narrow but real margin for resistance.
