Abstract: In Brazil, the Atlantic Forest is one of the most degraded biomes. Among the forest types of this biome is the Araucaria Forest (Mixed Ombrophilous Forest ? MOF), one of the formations that continues to lose considerable áreas, despite being home to endangered species and holding great socio-biodiversity. In this context, projects are needed to promote restoration, taking into account not only environmental attributes, but also social ones. Currently, the Reforma Project (Restoration of the Mixed Ombrophilous Forest - UFSC/BNDES) aims to restore areas of the MOF covering the Índio Galdino Agrarian Reform Settlement (Curitibanos and Frei Rogério). As a strategy, the Reforma project aims to ensure, in addition to the environmental compliance of the settlement's Legal Reserve areas, benefits for the local ecosystem and family farmers. In this context, this dissertation aims to contribute to the understanding of the challenges and opportunities of Agroforestry Systems (AFSs) as a strategy for ecological restoration, based on the representation of family farmers. To achieve this goal, participatory methodologies were adopted, such as interviews, guided tours, sketching, and workshops. To analyze the data, discourse analysis was performed in addition to five other textual analyses using IRAMUTEQ software. This information helped to understand the perception of the studied population regarding ecological restoration and agroforestry systems, as well as to design an agroforestry arrangement based on local knowledge and motivations. It was found that the informants' representation/perception of restoration is ambiguous and that water is an important asset; the concept of agroforestry is confusing and distant, but there is still the idea of production derived from the forest. For the design of the agroforestry arrangement, not only were the species mentioned by the farmers considered, which underwent a screening process, but also the availability of seedlings in regional nurseries. An area for AFSs implementation (0.25 ha/lot) was scaled to the local context, as well as spacing suggestions, and from then on, the number of 104 tree seedlings was determined. The selected species were grouped according to their main potential use to guide distribution in the field. The proposed arrangement includes native and exotic species, with guabiroba, yerba mate, and brazilian cherry among the native species. The registration of native varieties, as well as annual species of interest, provides opportunities for intercropping and interplanting in the arrangement. To return this data to the communities, workshops (feedback) were held, and an ?agroforestry kit? was delivered, made possible by the Reforma project. The participatory methodologies employed in this work, provided a socio-environmental diagnosis and stimulated the exchange of knowledge. It was also possible to propose an agroforestry arrangement that took into account the social, cultural, ecological, and legal aspects of the context studied. These main results provided opportunities for ecological restoration through AFSs, based on the regional context, which in turn can generate medium- and long-term production and conservation opportunities for family farmers and MOF. |
