This dissertation aims to investigate the hypothesis that, for Walter Benjamin, modernity is entangled in a profound process of interiorization, which is thematized in the unfinished project of the Passages, in the essays on Baudelaire's poetry, and in various texts from the 1930s, especially those dealing with the decline of historical experience. Considering the transition from pre-modernity to modernity, and intersecting these three domains of the German critic's work, the notion of interiority is identified by Benjamin in 19th-century Paris as both an image and a form of experience of the bourgeois class: through this image and space, it seeks to defend itself, contradictorily, from the collateral effects and possible damages generated by its own class project, based on the mythology of progress and novelty. Furthermore, the notion of interiority becomes a central element in Benjamin's structuring of modern experience, the Erlebnis, which has a strictly individual character, as well as for the conception of the concept of phantasmagoria, more specifically the \"phantasmagoria of the interior\". Within this contradiction, we propose the following itinerary, based on the relationship between art and experience: in the first part, we will investigate the relationship between interiority and experience, thematizing the issue of the decline of Erfahrung and the art of storytelling, as well as the rise of Erlebnis, presenting the figure of the storyteller and the figure of the novelist as symptom-images of the socio-historical transformation that led to the emergence of the notion of interiority; in the second and last part, we will deepen the relationship between interiority and modernity, emphasizing the architectural phenomenon that emerged in 19th-century Paris ? the bourgeois intérieur ?, as well as the phantasmagoric character of the Parisian metropolis as a mythical space of collective dream images. Finally, we attempt to confront phantasmagoria based on the reflection on the gaze and the allegorical practice of the collector and the flâneur, a way to rescue the utopian forces repressed in the collective unconscious by myth and thus offer glimpses of a possible \"historical awakening\".
