Title: Car connectivity and business models: impacts, opportunities and guidelines from the perspective of automakers and stakeholders
Author: Kohlbeck, Eloiza
Abstract: This dissertation is a compilation of three articles that collectively investigate how connectivity is reshaping business models in the automotive sector. Article 1 provides a broad overview of the topic, combining a systematic literature review and a case study to map technologies, services, and emerging opportunities, particularly in the context of developing economies. This article highlights key trends such as data monetization and mobility as a service, offering a structured view of ongoing transformations. Article 2 deepens the analysis at the dealership level, examining through interviews how connectivity impacts value propositions, revenue models, and key activities within this segment of the automotive chain. The results emphasize the need for training, new partnerships, and greater CRM integration, enhancing the practical understanding of the phenomenon. Finally, Article 3 identifies 32 critical success factors for value creation, delivery, and capture in connected business models, synthesizing them into a framework applicable to automakers and dealerships. Together, the three studies build an integrated narrative: they begin with a macro understanding of technologies and trends (Article 1), progress to an analysis of market dynamics at the consumer interface (Article 2), and culminate in a framework that guides strategic decision-making (Article 3). Thus, the dissertation contributes to both literature and practice by offering a holistic, multilevel, and applicable perspective on the evolution of business models amid the digital transformation of the automotive industry.
