Laços de família: exercícios de leitura

Abstract

Essa tese propõe uma leitura detalhada da coletânea Laços de família, de Clarice Lispector. O trabalho parte de uma lacuna no campo: embora a coletânea seja amplamente comentada em seus contos individuais, com uma extensa e sempre crescente fortuna crítica, ela raramente foi abordada como uma série de textos em interação. A coletânea é analisada conto a conto em capítulos individuais, mas com atenção constante às relações horizontais entre as narrativas. Um fio condutor da tese é que Laços de Família, publicado em 1960 e escrito nas décadas anteriores, pode ser lido como uma interrogação à família conjugal moderna, de certa forma antecipando, por meios oblíquos, literários, a crise que essa instituição atravessaria no final dos anos 1960, no contexto da contracultura e de maio 1968, espécie de antena sensível dessas perturbações. A ambição do trabalho é conseguir intervir na discussão mais especializada e também poder servir como ?livro de acompanhamento? à coletânea, tentando combinar rigor analítico com acessibilidade na exposição. À análise literária das narrativas se soma uma pesquisa histórica considerável, exposta durante os capítulos e também reunida em uma série de anexos ao final, dentre os quais se destacam dois achados. O primeiro é a redescoberta da narrativa ?A virgem tranquila? de Clarice Lispector, contemporânea aos contos de Laços de família, mas que a autora sintomaticamente optou por não incluir na sua coletânea. O segundo é a identificação da reportagem jornalística e da fotografia que deram origem ao conto ?A menor mulher do mundo?, material que a autora não apenas utilizou como inspiração, mas traduziu e retrabalhou diretamente na fatura do conto.

Abstract: This dissertation offers a detailed reading of Clarice Lispector?s short-story collection Laços de família. It begins from a critical gap: although the book has been widely discussed through its individual stories, and has generated an extensive and still growing body of criticism, it has rarely been approached as a set of texts in interaction. Each story is analyzed in a separate chapter, but with constant attention to the horizontal relations among the narratives. One thread running through the dissertation is that Laços de família, published in 1960 but written over the preceding decades, can be read as an interrogation of the modern conjugal family, anticipating, through oblique and specifically literary means, the crisis that this institution would undergo in the late 1960s, in the context of the counterculture and May 1968, as a kind of sensitive antenna for these disturbances (to invoke a modernist poet). The dissertation aims both to intervene in specialized critical debates and to serve as a companion to the collection, combining analytical rigor with clarity of exposition. Literary analysis is paired with substantial historical research, presented throughout the chapters and also gathered in a series of appendices at the end of the dissertation, from which two findings stand out. The first is the rediscovery of Clarice Lispector?s narrative ?A virgem tranquila,? written around the same time as the stories in Laços de família but tellingly left out of the collection by the author. The second is the identification of the newspaper report and photograph that gave rise to ?A menor mulher do mundo,? material that Lispector not only used as inspiration, but also translated and directly reworked in the writing of the story.
