A maternidade em "quarto de despejo" de Carolina Maria de Jesus

Abstract

Esta pesquisa analisa a maternidade na obra Quarto de despejo: diário de uma favelada, de Carolina Maria de Jesus, com o objetivo de compreender de que maneira a experiência materna influencia a construção da narrativa e a representação da pobreza, da fome e da exclusão social. A investigação adota uma abordagem qualitativa de caráter bibliográfico e analítico, articulando a leitura da obra com estudos sobre maternidade, vulnerabilidade social e literatura. A análise considera o contexto histórico de urbanização e crescimento das favelas brasileiras no século XX, bem como a trajetória de Carolina Maria de Jesus e sua relevância para a literatura nacional. A partir da leitura dos diários, observa-se que a maternidade constitui um dos principais eixos da narrativa, orientando a forma como a autora percebe, interpreta e registra a realidade ao seu redor. As preocupações com a alimentação, a segurança, a saúde e o futuro dos filhos estruturam grande parte dos acontecimentos narrados e revelam os impactos da escassez sobre a experiência materna. Além das dificuldades materiais, a obra evidencia dimensões emocionais e psicológicas marcadas pelo medo, pela culpa, pelo cansaço e pela constante responsabilidade de garantir a sobrevivência da família. Conclui-se que a maternidade desempenha papel fundamental na escrita de Carolina Maria de Jesus, funcionando como perspectiva a partir da qual a autora transforma a vivência cotidiana da pobreza em elaboração literária. Dessa forma, a maternidade em Quarto de despejo constitui não apenas um importante testemunho social, mas também uma ampliação das reflexões sobre a maternidade em contexto de escassez e vulnerabilidade.

This research analyzes motherhood in the work Quarto de despejo: diário de uma favelada (Child of the Dark), by Carolina Maria de Jesus, with the objective of understanding how the maternal experience influences the construction of the narrative and the representation of poverty, hunger, and social exclusion. The study adopts a qualitative bibliographic and analytical approach, articulating the reading of the work with studies on motherhood, social vulnerability, and literature. The analysis considers the historical context of urbanization and the growth of Brazilian favelas during the twentieth century, as well as Carolina Maria de Jesus’s life trajectory and her relevance to Brazilian literature. Through the reading of the diaries, it is observed that motherhood constitutes one of the main axes of the narrative, guiding the way the author perceives, interprets, and records the reality around her. Concerns regarding food, safety, health, and the future of her children structure a significant part of the events narrated and reveal the impacts of scarcity on the maternal experience. Beyond material difficulties, the work highlights emotional and psychological dimensions marked by fear, guilt, exhaustion, and the constant responsibility of ensuring the family’s survival. It is concluded that motherhood plays a fundamental role in Carolina Maria de Jesus’s writing, functioning as a perspective through which the author transforms the everyday experience of poverty into literary expression. Therefore, motherhood in Quarto de despejo constitutes not only an important social testimony, but also an expansion of reflections on motherhood in contexts of scarcity and vulnerability.
