This study presents the structural analysis of a rear suspension shackle from a Chevrolet D20 pickup truck using the Finite Element Method (FEM), with the objective of evaluating its behavior under nominal static loading and overload conditions. Initially, concepts related to vehicle dynamics, suspension systems, and the fundamentals of the Finite Element Method are discussed. Subsequently, a simplified three-dimensional model of the shackle was developed in SolidWorks and then exported to ANSYS Mechanical, where the material properties, boundary conditions, and a refined mesh were defined. Numerical simulations were performed to analyze the distribution of von Mises equivalent stresses, the total structural displacements, and the component’s factor of safety. The results indicated a maximum stress of 118.66 MPa and a maximum displacement of 0.1265 mm under the nominal loading condition, while under the overload condition, the maximum stress and displacement reached 127.41 MPa and 0.1358 mm, respectively, representing increases of approximately 7.4% in maximum stress and 7.3% in maximum displacement compared to the nominal condition. The factor of safety evaluation yielded values of approximately 2.11 for the nominal condition and 1.96 for the overload condition, indicating that the component remained below the material’s yield strength in both analyzed scenarios. The highest stress concentrations were observed in the central region of the shackle. Even under overload conditions, the maximum displacement remained below 0.14 mm, demonstrating the component’s high structural stiffness. Therefore, the study demonstrated the effectiveness of the Finite Element Method in the structural assessment of automotive components. |
