The COVID-19 pandemic combined an economic shock on the retail sector with the massive entry of individual investors into the Brazilian stock market, creating a suitable setting to examine how corporate communication influences investor reactions. Earnings releases serve a simultaneously informational and promotional function, allowing management to shape investors' perceptions of reported performance through language. This study investigated the impact of the textual attributes of these documents, particularly tone and length, on the short-term market reaction to the stocks of consumer retail companies listed on B3, from 2020 to 2023. Based on a balanced panel of 192 observations (12 companies × 16 quarters), the tone of the releases was measured using a Portuguese-language sentiment dictionary, the Cumulative Abnormal Return (CAR) was computed over a three-day window through the event study methodology, and the moderating effect of tone on the reaction to earnings surprises was estimated via multiple regression with robust standard errors. In the aggregate analysis, all formulated hypotheses were rejected, with no statistically measurable effect of the textual variables on CAR. However, segmenting the sample into two macroeconomic regimes revealed that this apparent nullity stems from the aggregation of effects with opposite signs: tone acted as an amplifier of the reaction to earnings surprises during the uncertainty regime (2020– 2021), with a positive and significant coefficient (β = +1.46), and as an attenuator during the normalization regime (2022–2023), with a negative coefficient (β = −0.87), resulting in a difference between regimes that is statistically significant at the 1% level (β = −2.33; p = 0.004). This reversal, formalized through a unified model with triple interactions and confirmed by a structural break test, proved robust in the main sample, yet conditional on sectoral composition and sensitive to the presence of atypical earnings surprises. The findings indicate that the relationship between corporate language and market reaction is not static, varying according to the context of informational uncertainty, and that the heterogeneity of macroeconomic regimes may explain part of the inconclusive results previously documented in the Brazilian literature on the subject. |
