Comparative studies of avian anatomy are relevant for understanding multiple aspects of bird biology, relating biomechanics to ecomorphology. However, osteological characters have received greater emphasis in taxonomic and phylogenetic studies, which is important for reinforcing relationships of ancestry and evolutionary history. This study investigated, through a comparative approach, the osteological characteristics of three main regions of the skeletal system of Ardeidae: the cranio-mandibular complex, the cervical column, and the hindlimbs, seeking to understand aspects of their anatomical variation and morphofunctional implications for the foraging ecology of the species. A total of 10 skeletons representing 7 species were examined: Ardea alba, Botaurus pinnatus, Bubulcus ibis, Butorides striatus, Egretta thula, Nyctanassa violacea, and Nycticorax nycticorax. Osteological descriptions were carried out using standardized measurements available in the literature and adapted by the author, and the characterization of the studied regions was performed according to the literature. Osteological variations identified during this study are not only of taxonomic importance but are also relevant for relating differences in form and structure to discussions of Ardeidae ecology found in the literature. Important anatomical characteristics were identified in the temporal and occipital regions of the skull and in the cervical column, showing significant integration with the associated musculature and ligaments. The cervical vertebrae and their dimensions vary considerably, whereas the cranial region is associated with anatomical reinforcement at the cranio-cervical junction. The hindlimbs exhibit greater anatomical variation in their osteological features, especially the tarsometatarsus of Ardeidae, in which the hypotarsal crests are fused to different degrees, forming a complex arrangement of canals and grooves. The dimensions of the hindlimbs in relation to total body length and species mass reveal an interesting pattern: the tibiotarsus is the longest bone of the leg, presenting a greater length than the other bones, whereas the femur exhibited less variation in length relative to total body size and increases in species body mass. Some of these anatomical particularities show an important relationship with the lifestyles of Ardeidae species, particularly regarding habitat use during foraging, requiring further understanding through additional qualitative and quantitative approaches. |
