| Abstract: |
The textile industry presents a high pollution potential due to its high water consumption and the generation of effluents with high organic load, dyes, solids, salts, and compounds of difficult degradation. In this context, this study evaluated the performance of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor, known as UASB, in the treatment of real textile effluent, as well as the production of biogas and methane from different inocula and substrates. The experimental system was operated with effluent from a textile dyeing and finishing industry, and physicochemical parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, solids series, and color were monitored. Anaerobic biodegradability was evaluated through the BOD₅/COD ratio and gasometric assays using a eudiometer and the OxiTop manometric system, with cattle manure, anaerobic sludge acclimated with sucrose (E1), and anaerobic sludge acclimated with acetate (E2). The results indicated that although the effluent presented biodegradable potential, the UASB reactor showed limited performance under the evaluated conditions, with low removal of organic matter and color, as well as the persistence of a high particulate load in the treated effluent. In the biogas production assays, the treatments with cattle manure supplemented with sucrose and acetate showed the best responses, while the anaerobic sludges E1 and E2 demonstrated lower methanogenic activity. The comparison between the methods indicated partial agreement between the eudiometer and OxiTop, with differences attributed to the measurement principles of each system. It is concluded that anaerobic treatment alone was not sufficient to effectively remove the pollutant load from the textile effluent, and the adoption of complementary treatment steps is recommended. |
