Translating humor: an analysis of the Brazilian–Portuguese subtitling of the stand-up comedy special The Overthinker by Demetri Martin

Abstract

A relação entre tradução e humor sempre foi complexa, não só para os acadêmicos da área, mas para aqueles que precisam lidar com a tradução de conteúdos humorísticos na prática. Consequentemente, pesquisadores e letrados na área de Estudos da Tradução e também de Teorias do Humor dedicaram anos para entender como o humor é produzido, a fim de entender o fenômeno e criar estratégias que facilitassem o trabalho de tradutores. Com o processo de globalização, a necessidade de tradução de mídias audiovisuais aumentou, o que colaborou no desenvolvimento e destaque do campo da Tradução Audiovisual. O objetivo do estudo é investigar através de uma análise descritiva o processo de tradução das piadas originais para um público não familiarizado com o Inglês, apenas com o auxílio da legenda em PT–BR, assim como verificar se o humor foi replicado. Para isso, foi feita a transcrição de piadas previamente selecionadas tanto do roteiro em Inglês, quanto da legenda em PT–BR. O critério de escolha foi piadas com contexto linguístico e cultural, por serem especialmente desafiadoras de serem traduzidas.

The relation between translation and humor has always been complex, not only for academics in the field but also for those who deal with the translation of humorous content in practice. Consequently, researchers and scholars in the field of Translation Studies and Humor Studies have dedicated years to understanding how humor is created, in order to understand the phenomenon and invent strategies that facilitate the work of translators. With the process of globalization, the demand for audiovisual media translation has increased, which has contributed to the development and prominence of the field. The aim of the study is to investigate through a descriptive analysis the translation process of the original jokes for an audience unfamiliar with English, aided only by the PT-BR subtitles, as well as to verify whether the humor was successfully replicated. To do so, a transcription of previously selected jokes was conducted, both from the English script and the PT-BR subtitles. The selection criteria focused on jokes with language and culture-specific themes, as they pose a challenging task when it comes to translation.
