Cantando a nossa história: Ildefonso Juvenal e o samba catarinense (1945-1948)

Abstract

O presente trabalho apresenta reflexões fruto da pesquisa do mestrado acadêmico. A partir de um estranhamento inicial sobre uma crônica escrita pelo marinheiro Ildefonso Juvenal, publicada no Jornal a Gazeta de 1945, este trabalho tomou forma. Juvenal tratava-se de um intelectual negro possivelmente proveniente da marinha catarinense, que, em 1945, fez uma declaração no Jornal A Gazeta de Florianópolis. Em formato de crônica, Serpentinas do último carnaval, o escritor e farmacêutico, apresenta um incômodo sobre a ausência de escolas de samba na ilha e de festividades carnavalescas como no Rio de Janeiro. Neste horizonte de fatos, o problema desta pesquisa é entender o audioposicionamento sonoro e social, dessa personagem, quando teceu duras críticas ao samba da ilha. Isto é, decifrar relações e percepções que influenciaram a produção de sonoridades naqueles anos e, mais diretamente à personagem, qual era repertório sonoro que influenciou Ildefonso em suas percepções culturais. O que essa personagem tinha a dizer sobre o samba produzido e consumido no Brasil e o que isso diz sobre a música consumida e reproduzida na cidade de Florianópolis. O objetivo é resgatar elementos da esfera social e de circulação do samba em Florianópolis de 1945-1948, mergulhando sobre a história ao redor de Ildefonso Juvenal e seus percursos entre ilhas. Utilizando,assim, fontes compostas tanto por canções, composições, quanto por mapas urbanos do contexto da ilha, registros de movimentações sociais da população de Desterro, análise de crônica e dos próprios ?barulhos? da cidade naqueles anos. Para tanto, essa investigação parte das abordagens de pesquisa da História da Música, ressaltando diálogos e conexões com a História Social, a História da Cultura e os Estudos do som. Por fim, como resultado almejado espero que, com este trabalho, seja possível contribuir com o desenvolvimento do campo de pesquisa que conecta a Música e a História, que inspire novas investigações e levantamentos de fonte sobre a música como o eixo de conexão entre lugares e pessoas e, por fim, instigue novos estudos sobre a história do samba no Brasil.

Abstract: This work presents reflections resulting from the ongoing academic master's degree. From an initial strangeness about a chronicle written by sailor Ildefonso Juvenal, published in Jornal a Gazeta in 1945, this work took shape. Juvenal was a black sailor possibly from the 5th Naval District, who, in 1945, made a statement in the newspaper A Gazeta de Florianópolis. In the format of a chronicle, Serpentinas of the last carnival, the sailor presents an annoyance about the absence of samba schools on the island and of carnival festivities like in Rio de Janeiro. In this horizon of facts, the problem of this research is to understand the sound and social audio positioning of this character, when he made harsh criticisms of the island's samba. That is, deciphering relationships and perceptions that influenced the production of sounds in those years and, more directly to the character, what was the sound repertoire that influenced Ildefonso in his cultural perceptions. What this character had to say about the samba produced and consumed in Brazil and what this says about the music consumed and reproduced in the city of Florianópolis. The objective is to rescue elements of the social sphere and circulation of samba in Florianópolis from 1945-1948, delving into the history around Ildefonso Juvenal and his journeys between islands. Thus, using sources composed of both songs, compositions, and urban maps of the island's context, records of social movements of the population of Desterro, analysis of chronicles and the city's own ?noises? in those years. To this end, this investigation is based on research approaches to the History of Music, highlighting dialogues and connections with Social History, the History of Culture and Sound Studies. Finally, as a desired result, I hope that, with this work, it will be possible to contribute to the development of the field of research that connects Music and History, which will inspire new investigations and source surveys on music as the axis of connection between places and people and, finally, instigate new studies on the history of samba in Brazil.
