Abstract

A censura de livros acompanha a história da humanidade desde a invenção da escrita e não está limitada a países onde imperam regimes totalitários ou fundamentalistas. No Brasil está presente desde o período colonial e comumente as pesquisas sobre o assunto abordam a censura em períodos de regimes totalitários. Essa pesquisa partiu da necessidade de investigar de que formas a censura se apresenta e suas motivações, bem como trazer à tona a percepção das pessoas em geral sobre a censura de livros no Brasil. O objetivo deste estudo é identificar os elementos que constituem os atos de censura de livros no Brasil, a partir de motivações, obras e autorias. Especificamente buscou-se identificar os atos/eventos/episódios de censura; identificar os títulos e/ou autores de livros mais censurados; e analisar as razões por trás da censura desses títulos e/ou autores, investigando a que tipo de questões estão relacionadas. Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva, bibliográfica e de abordagem qualitativa cujo instrumento foi um questionário online de natureza mista e as respostas submetidas à análise de conteúdo. Os resultados apontam a ocorrência de censura de livros no país, em especial no âmbito da biblioteca escolar, sendo perpetrada principalmente por autoridades da instituição e por pais/responsáveis, em sua maioria entre 2022 e 2023. A principal motivação identificada é de que a obra é considerada imprópria para crianças e/ou adolescentes. As motivações por trás desses atos censórios são influenciadas por questões políticas, religiosas, morais e temáticas relacionadas a gênero e orientação sexual.

Book censorship has been part of human history since the invention of writing and is not limited to countries with totalitarian or fundamentalist regimes. It has been present in Brazil since colonial times, and research on the subject usually focuses on censorship during periods of totalitarian regimes. This research arose from the need to investigate the forms and motivations behind censorship, as well as the perception of people in general about book censorship in Brazil. The aim of this study is to identify the elements that make up acts of book censorship in Brazil, based on motivations, works and authors. Specifically, we sought to identify acts/events/episodes of censorship; identify the most censored book titles and/or authors; and analyze the reasons behind the censorship of these book titles and/or authors, investigating what kind of issues they are related to. This is a descriptive, bibliographical study with a qualitative approach. The instrument was an online mixed questionnaire and the answers were submitted to content analysis. The results point to the occurrence of book censorship in the country, especially within school libraries, being perpetrated mainly by the institution's authorities and by parents/guardians, mostly between 2022 and 2023. The main reason identified is that the work is considered unsuitable for children and/or adolescents. The motivations behind these censorious acts are influenced by political, religious, and moral issues and themes related to gender and sexual orientation.
