Visibilizar o desconhecido no conhecido: crônicas berlinenses de Siegfried Kracauer

Abstract

A presente pesquisa tem como objeto empírico a breve prosa jornalístico-literária de Siegfried Kracauer (1889-1966), publicada, durante a República de Weimar, no suplemento cultural do jornal Frankfurter Zeitung, entre 1925-1933, e reunida em 1964 na coletânea Straßen in Berlin und anderswo (Ruas em Berlim e alhures). No intuito de rastrear e narrar a realidade da metrópole moderna, Kracauer parte da observação insistente e repetida de fenômenos cotidianos, aparentemente insignificantes, do mundo vivido (Lebenswelt) em espaços públicos. Lugares, objetos e tipos humanos, geralmente despercebidos pelo olhar distraído dos transeuntes, são registrados e resgatados pelo caminhante urbano - alter ego do autor - do esquecimento e da marginalidade, e interpretados como manifestações não censuradas do inconsciente coletivo, e também como signos reveladores de profundas estruturas e processos sociais. O objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar a visão da modernidade urbana, ambivalente entre ceticismo e empatia, inscrita nessas miniaturas em prosa com temática urbana, chamadas pelo autor de imagens urbanas (Stadtbilder), o que corresponde ao termo benjaminiano, imagens do pensamento (Denkbilder), e àquilo que no Brasil se denomina crônica. Para discernir os traços específicos da narração imagética de Kracauer, revela-se esclarecedor o instrumental teórico de Walter Benjamin sobre a narrativa popular e a crônica histórica, e também ideias de pensadores como Simmel, Adorno, Frisby, sobre a representação da metrópole moderna em gêneros épicos. Benjamin constata o declínio da narrativa tradicional, junto com o declínio da experiência, devido a profundas mudanças no mundo vivido: racionalização, urbanização, industrialização, individualização, a informação como forma dominante de comunicação. O presente estudo procura mostrar - combinando close reading com uma análise de constelação e contextualização histórica - como Kracauer realiza, em sua crônica, ao narrar microacontecimentos na metrópole moderna, uma Aufhebung (abolição-preservação-transfiguração) da narrativa tradicional e da crônica histórica, integrando elementos do ensaio e da reportagem. Em uma postura comprometida com a tradição do Esclarecimento, ele consegue transmitir experiências e recordações coletivas impregnadas de valores éticos, como justiça, tolerância e humanidade.

Abstract: empirical object of the present research is the brief journalistic-literary prose of Siegfried Kracauer (1889-1966), published during the Weimar Republic in the cultural supplement of the newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung, between 1925-33, and compiled, in 1964, in the collection Straßen in Berlin und anderswo (Streets in Berlin and elsewhere). Kracauer 's intention was to trace and narrate the reality of the modern Metropolis, captured through the insistent and repeated observation of apparently insignificant everyday phenomena of life-world (Lebenswelt) in public spaces. Places, objects and human types, usually unnoticed by the distractedly looking passers-by, are rescued by that city walker and narrator, the author?s alter ego, from oblivion and marginality, and interpreted as uncensored manifestations of the collective unconscious, as well as tokens of profound social structures and processes. Our objective is to analyse the ambivalent view, oscillating between criticism and empathy, of urban modernity, inscribed in these prose miniatures called by the author city images (Stadtbilder), what corresponds to the Benjaminian term thought images (Denkbilder), and to what in Brazil is called crônica (metropolitan miniature). In order to discern the specific traits of Kracauer's imagetic narration, it is useful to have recourse to Walter Benjamin's theoretical instruments about the popular narrative and the historical chronicle, as well as to ideas of Simmel, Adorno, Frisby and other thinkers, on representation of the modern metropolis in epic genres. Benjamin notes the decline of traditional narrative and of experience, attributing it to profound changes in the life-world: rationalization, urbanization, industrialization, individualization, information as dominant form of communication. The present study seeks to show ? combining close reading with constellation analysis and historical contextualization ? how Kracauer performs, in his crônica, by narrating microevents in the modern metropolis, an Aufhebung (abolition-preservation-transfiguration) of the traditional narrative and historical chronicle, integrating elements of essay and reportage. In a posture committed to the tradition of Enlightenment, he manages to transmit experiences and collective memories impregnated with ethical values, such as justice, tolerance and humanity.
