A tropologia na antropologia: metáfora e produção de sentido em Roy Wagner

Abstract

Por tropologia entende-se o estudo dos tropos, ou como melhor os conhecemos, figuras de linguagem. Como a mais relevante dentre os tropos, a metáfora foi objeto de curiosidade e pesquisa nas mais diversas áreas do conhecimento – incluindo a antropologia. Dentre os antropólogos que estenderam a metáfora aos seus estudos, destaca-se Roy Wagner: em seu segundo trabalho, a partir de registros etnográficos entre os Daribi na Melanésia, o autor elege a metáfora como processo responsável pela produção de todos os significados em uma cultura. O presente trabalho parte do estudo da obra Habu: The Innovation of Meaning in Daribi Religion (1972) buscando pensar, contextualizar e discutir as contribuições de Wagner, tanto para a tropologia na antropologia quanto para os estudos da metáfora em geral.

Tropology is understood as the study of tropes or, as they are more commonly known, figures of speech. Considered the most relevant among tropes, the metaphor has been an object of research in several different areas of knowledge, including anthropology. Among the anthropologists who studied metaphor, Roy Wagner stands out: in his second work, derived from ethnographic records from the Daribi in Melanesia, Wagner elects metaphor as the process responsible for the production of all meanings in a culture. By means of the study of Habu: The Innovation of Meaning in Daribi Religion (1972), the present work seeks to think, contextualize, and discuss Wagner's contributions to the tropology in anthropology and to the studies of metaphor in general.
