A sentinela isolada: o cotidiano da colônia militar de Santa Thereza (1854-1883)

Abstract

Esta dissertação explora o cotidiano dos soldados e dos oficiais do Exército brasileiro e dos que viveram na colônia militar de Santa Thereza, no interior da província de Santa Catarina, na segunda metade do século XIX. Com base no estudo da documentação militar e administrativa desse período, apresentam-se características importantes sobre o sistema de colonização militar brasileiro, implantado, sobretudo,na fronteira ocidental do País e nas principais vias de comunicação no interior. A colônia militar de Santa Thereza, estabelecida em 1854, no caminho entre as vilas de São José e Lages, cumpriu importantes funções durante o período imperial brasileiro, como povoar o interior do território, cobrar impostos sobre as mercadorias transportadas pelo caminho, realizar obras de manutenção nesse percurso e combater os ataques indígenas na região. Essas funções, e as atividades desenvolvidas na colônia, envolveram um contingente de homens livres e pobres que prestava serviços ao Exército. O trabalho desenvolvido pelos moradores da colônia e as relações estabelecidas entre eles são os elementos centrais deste estudo. <br>

Abstract : This dissertation explores the daily life of the soldiers and officers of theBrazilian army and those who lived in the military colony of Santa Thereza, within the province of Santa Catarina, in the second half of thenineteenth century. Based on the study of military and administrative documentation of this period, the paper presents important characteristics about the system of colonization Brazilian military, deployed mostly in the western border of the country and the main roads within the territory. The military colony of Santa Thereza, established in1854, on the road between the villages of São José and Lages, fulfill important functions during the Brazilian Imperial, as the people within the territory, levy taxes on goods transported by road, performing works maintaining this path and fight the Indian attacks in the region. These functions, and activities developed in the colony, involved a contingent of poor freemen and providing services to the Army. The work done bythe residents of the colony and the relations between them are the central elements of this study.
