Research on the health status of aquatic animals, wild or cultured can be done in several ways. Among them, histology is a tool that assists in the understanding and prevention of diseases, as well as increasing production yields and histological alterations can be used as possible indicators of environmental contamination. The technique basically consists in obtaining very thin slices of the organs of the animals so that, when stained, it is possible to visualize alterations in cellular and tissue levels. The degree of these alterations, usually found in the gills, liver, spleen, heart and intestine, may be directly related to the way these animals are kept in captivity or to the environment in which they are exposed. In order to protect and / or improve the health of these animals, the maintenance of water quality parameters within the appropriate range for the cultivated species, the care with feeding management, prophylactic actions regarding everyday utensils and the adoption of practices that minimize vector input must be maintained. In this way, the probability of finding healthy fish, with intact organs and their preserved functions, increases. Thus, the authors of this guide intend to assist researchers and fish farmers with the most used techniques for histological analysis, as well as to illustrate the main alterations associated with different organs of fish. The work is the result of scientific productions jointly developed by graduate students, professors and technicians of the Aquatic Organisms Health Laboratory (AQUOS) of the Aquaculture Department of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), as part of the projects CNPq 446072/2014 -1 and 305869/2014-0. All animals procedures are performed by trained persons, with certificate of participation in the Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals (CEUA / UFSC) following the recommendations of well-being, anesthesia and euthanasia.

This study integrates science and art to examine the early recognition of equine welfare science. The thesis is structured into two studies. The first study focuses on the book Black Beauty (Anna Sewell, 1877), a renowned classic of juvenile literature worldwide. Following a traditional literary analysis, each chapter of the book was qualitatively analyzed to identify codes and categories based on established and recognized concepts within equine welfare science. The themes identified and their corresponding chapter frequencies are as follows: human-horse relationship (41/49), emotions and feelings (41/49), equine behavior (22/49), riding (17/49), management (16/49), working horse (15/49), health (12/49), and training, memory, and sensory system of equines (11/49 each). This analysis revealed that, despite being written in 1877, Black Beauty anticipated topics that remain highly relevant to contemporary equine welfare science. It also highlighted the potential of Black Beauty as an educational tool to foster awareness and responsibility regarding human roles in equine welfare. The second study presents an analysis of equine representations in artworks by Stubbs, Géricault, Delacroix, and Bonheur, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Based on iconographic concepts combined with modern understandings of equine behavior and welfare, the analysis identified accurate depictions of horses’ emotional expressions, particularly those associated with fear, pain, and discomfort. Furthermore, it demonstrated that these artistic records prefigured scientific recognition of equine sentience. Overall, this study showed that art could provide empirical records of equines’ physical and mental characteristics, contributing to science and promoting the welfare of these animals.

Aquaculture health is now one of the fundamental pillars for the success of modern aquaculture, and it is precisely on this axis that this book “Fish Health: Diagnosis and Health Management in Farming Systems” was conceived. The book presents a comprehensive, critical, and multidisciplinary approach to the challenges, methods, and innovations in the diagnosis and management of farmed fish health. Based on up-to-date scientific evidence and practical experience accumulated in production systems, the book addresses the topic of fish health not only as a veterinary or zootechnical problem, but also as an economic and food safety issue. The health of aquatic organisms is kown as a direct reflection of the interactions between environment, management, nutrition, and immunocompetence, requiring systematic and preventive interventions.
The book highlights the importance of early and accurate diagnosis of diseases as a strategic management tool, reinforcing that clinical observation, the use of necropsies, and the application of laboratory techniques (such as PCR, histopathology, bacterial culture, and molecular analysis) are essential tools for minimizing losses, ensuring animal welfare, and preserving the quality of the farming environment. The relevance of this work lies in its ability to integrate theory and practice, science and production, promoting a broad and at the same time applicable view of health management in aquaculture. It describes etiological agents such as bacteria, viruses, parasites of economic importance, and proposes real solutions that are adaptable to the reality of producers, including biosafety strategies, rational use of antimicrobials, therapeutic alternatives (herbal medicines, vaccines, probiotics), and technological innovations such as environmental sensors, artificial intelligence, and aquatic biotechnology.
In addition, the work values the technical training and continuing education of professionals in the production chain, emphasizing that constant surveillance, databased decision-making, and standardization
of diagnostic procedures are fundamental actions for efficient and resilient aquaculture. It also emphasizes the interdependence between animal health, environmental health, and public health, placing the topic of aquaculture health in the context of the “One Health” concept.

Batista, Danilo Vitor Vilhena; Tavares-Dias, Marcos; Fujimoto, Rodrigo Yudi; Martins, Maurício Laterça
The Amazon River basin is one of the richest and most diverse aquatic ecosystems on Earth, home to an impressive diversity of fish with enormous variation in size and color patterns that attract scientists, aquaculturists, exporters, and lovers of Amazonian ichthyofauna. This Neotropical basin has around 3,000 species of freshwater fish of ecological and economic importance to countless populations in this vast region, of which more than 400 species are ornamental fish.
The fishing of ornamental fish from the Amazon Basin is an important activity for the economy of various riverside populations, mainly in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru, who survive by catching various species for export. In Brazil, it has been estimated that the ornamental fish trade began with freshwater species from the Amazon region, coinciding with the discovery of the cardinal Paracheirodom axelrodi. Despite its importance, this extractive activity faces major challenges, such as the need for more sustainable management. Thus, the cultivation of Amazonian ornamental fish species can help solve these problems, in addition to offering direct and indirect employment opportunities for thousands of people in the Amazon. However, there are still some obstacles to the growth of ornamental fish aquaculture, such as a lack of knowledge about the current market and various aspects related to the management of Amazonian ornamental fish in intensive cultivation.
The publication addresses important aspects for the development of intensive farming activities for ornamental fish species from the Amazon, covering the main species and their reproductive aspects, genetics, legal and conservation aspects, marketing, management, and problems related to the main frequent diseases. Therefore, this work is of great relevance to freshwater ornamental fish aquaculture, serving as a reference for those interested in producing Amazonian fish, a growing demand in this professional activity, as well as for those interested in deepening their knowledge of fish species that attract so much international interest.
This publication highlights the knowledge and experiences of various collaborators from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in aquaculture, who have compiled studies from the literature on the fascinating knowledge of Amazonian ornamental fish farming. It has been organized by researchers with expertise in the field of ornamental fish aquaculture, as well as in the structuring of books aimed at different audiences.
