Batalha de discursos: o advento republicano e a (re)construção da política catarinense nos jornais partidários (1889-1898)

Abstract

Em Santa Catarina a adoção do regime republicano provocou um processo de renovação das forças políticas e sociais que desembocou na formação de dois grupos partidários em luta pelo poder estadual: republicanistas x federalistas. Por muito tempo, a historiografia tradicional apontou-os respectivamente como #verdadeiros republicanos# e #restauradores disfarçados#. Contudo, a interpretação realizada à luz dos conceitos da nova história cultural e social demonstrou que ambos os partidos defendiam a causa republicana. Logo, se fronteiras entre os grupos não eram tão claras e consensuais, elas foram criadas e legitimadas em algum momento. Por isso, perceber a emergência dessas identificações e representações, suas diversas fases de construção e acirrada disputa, nos jornais partidários República e O Estado, bem como sua sedimentação de sentidos e legitimação via atuação do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Santa Catarina (IHGSC), é a proposta dessa dissertação. Para tanto, analisam-se aqui a configuração e o posicionamento de cada jornal, a seleção dos assuntos, as estratégias discursivas e a recorrência às idealizações sobre a República, o povo e o federalismo enquanto instrumentos dessa luta simbólica em que os dois partidos estavam envolvidos: a luta pela identificação como #verdadeiros republicanos#. Uma identificação disputada por ambos os partidos e, finalmente, assumida como capital simbólico dos republicanistas. Esse fechamento discursivo de fronteiras para delimitar e diferenciar os grupos representou um trabalho simbólico ainda mais necessário considerando-se as poucas diferenças efetivas entre republicanistas e federalistas. Luta que envolvia não apenas a afirmação de sua identificação e visão de mundo, mas, principalmente, a possibilidade de permanência e de atuação no campo uma vez que a definição do que era ser legitimamente um #político republicano# determinava quem estava apto a participar desse campo reconfigurado e assim guiar o estado no novo regime.

In Santa Catarina State, the adoption of the Republican regime provocked a process of political and social forces renewal which resulted in the formation of two party-groups struggling for the statal power: republicanists versus federalists. For a long time, traditional historiography refered to them, respectively, as #true republicans# and #disguised conservatives#. However, the interpretation through the new cultural and social History#s concepts demonstrated that both parties defended the republican cause. Therefore, if bounderies between the groups were not so clear and consensual, they were created and legitimized at some point. There lies the purpose of the present work: perceive the urgency of these identifications and representations, their different phases of construction and intense dispute, in the republican newpapers República and O Estado, as well as their sedimentation of meanings and legitimization through the Santa Catarina Historical and Geographycal Institute (IHGSC). For this purpose, I analysed the configuration and the positioning of each newspaper, the topics selection, the discourse strategies and the recurrent idealizations about the Republic, the people and the federalism as instruments of this symbolic fight in which the two parties were envolved: the struggle for identification as #truly republican#. This identification was pursued by both parties and, eventually, assumed as symbolic capital of the republicanists. This discoursive definition of boundaries took place in order to limit and distinguish the groups and represented a symbolic work even more necessary, if taken into account the few effective differences between republicanists and federalists. The struggle envolved not only the affirmation of their identification and vision of the world, but, mainly, the possibility of perduring and acting in the field once the definition of a true #republican politician# determined who was prepared to act in the reconfigurated field and, thus, guide the State into the new regime.
