Manguezais são ambientes altamente diversos, estruturalmente complexos e adaptados a condições ambientais extremas. |

Mangroves are highly diverse, structurally complex ecosystems adapted to extreme environmental conditions. In addition to supporting high biodiversity, they function as nursery areas for fish and crustaceans, including commercially important species, owing to the high availability of shelter from predators and food resources. Despite their ecological importance, these ecosystems have been threatened by a wide range of anthropogenic activities. The present study evaluated the spatial variability of fish and crustacean assemblages in preserved and deforested habitats of the Laguna mangrove (Santa Catarina, Brazil), the southernmost mangrove along the Atlantic coast of the Americas. Five habitats were sampled in triplicate over the course of one year, with one sampling event per season, comprising three preserved mangrove habitats (sites IC ? Inner with mangroves, CM ? Control with mangroves, and EM ? Outer with mangroves) and two deforested habitats (sites SV ? Without vegetation and VH ? Heterogeneous vegetation). Abundance, effective diversity (Hill number, q = 1), assemblage structure, the occurrence of indicator species, and the influence of environmental variables on assemblage composition were assessed separately for fish and crustaceans. A total of 4,388 individuals belonging to 34 species and 18 families were collected, including 30 fish species and four crustacean species, with Penaeus paulensis, Callinectes sapidus, Callinectes danae, Atherinella brasiliensis, and Anchoa marinii being the most abundant taxa. Environmental variables did not differ significantly among habitats. Effective diversity showed no significant differences for either assemblage, whereas abundance differed only for fish. Based on PERMANOVA results, crustacean assemblage composition differed significantly between vegetated habitats and the severely deforested habitat. Only fish species were identified as habitat indicators: the silverside Atherinella brasiliensis and the one-sided livebearer Jenynsia multidentata. Among the environmental variables evaluated, only temperature significantly explained the observed variation in assemblage composition, according to the dbRDA results. These findings demonstrate that the deforestation of critical nursery habitats may promote the replacement of nursery-dependent specialist species by generalist and opportunistic species, highlighting the need for increased and renewed efforts to monitor and better understand the ecological consequences affecting this important ecosystem. |
