A pesquisa compara três mode-
mento Model Confidence Set (MCS).
Portanto, a inclusão

This study investigates whether the Google Trends Search Volume Index (SVI),
used as a proxy for investor attention, has predictive power over the weekly realized
volatility of Brazilian stocks listed on B3. The analysis compares three forecasting
models: a random walk benchmark (M0), serving as a naïve reference model; an
eGARCH(1,1) model (M1); and an eGARCH-X(1,1) model (M2), which incorporates
abnormal search attention. The exogenous variable is defined as the logarithmic de-
viation of the SVI from its median over the previous eight weeks. Model performance
is evaluated through an out-of-sample forecasting exercise using a rolling window of
156 weeks and one-step-ahead forecasts for a panel of 260 stocks. Forecast accuracy
is assessed using the QLIKE loss function combined with the Model Confidence Set
(MCS) procedure. The results show that both eGARCH specifications substantially
outperform the random walk benchmark. However, at the 10% significance level,
the MCS confidence set contains only the standard eGARCH model. Therefore, the
inclusion of search-based attention does not improve volatility forecasts in the aggre-
gate, a result that remains robust across different data-filtering criteria. At the same
time, the coefficient associated with the SVI is statistically significant in at least
half of the estimation windows for 101 of the 260 assets. Furthermore, stocks for
which the SVI coefficient is significant in more than 70% of the out-of-sample fore-
casting period exhibit higher average realized volatility than the remaining stocks.
These findings indicate that the statistical significance of the attention coefficient
and its out-of-sample predictive usefulness are empirically distinct phenomena. The
evidence suggests that abnormal investor attention tends to follow realized volatility
rather than precede it. The study contributes to the literature on behavioral finance
and investor attention in emerging markets by showing that internet search activ-
ity carries statistical relevance for volatility dynamics, while providing limited and
heterogeneous incremental forecasting benefits across assets. |
