O objetivo do estudo é analisar a
do profissional maior esforço cognitivo.
o outro oferece apoio e suporte, garantindo a qualidade e assegurando a fidelidade

The performance of the Brazilian Sign Language–Portuguese interpreter in the
educational context has become established as a fundamental element in ensuring
linguistic accessibility and supporting the teaching and learning process for deaf
students. In this context, interpreter rotation stands out as a necessary practice for
ensuring the quality of interpretive mediation in the school environment. Given this, this
research seeks to address the following question: how does relay interpreting impact
the quality of interpretation in an educational context? The objective of the study is to
analyze the importance of relay interpreting in the work of the Libras–Portuguese
interpreter in the school setting, understanding it as an indispensable collaborative
strategy for effective communication. Regarding methodology, this is a bibliographic
study with a qualitative approach, grounded in research on turn-taking, types of
interpretation, bilingual education, and cognitive processes. The theoretical findings
indicate that the absence of interpretive alternation requires greater cognitive effort
from the professional. It is also emphasized that the absence of turn-taking
compromises the grammatical accuracy of the sign language and hinders the control
of interpreting time in extended activities. Given this reality, turn-taking emerges as a
fundamental strategy to reduce physical and mental exhaustion, foster partnership
among interpreters, and ensure greater clarity, fidelity, and discursive continuity during
mediation. Furthermore, it helps strike a balance between the speed of interpretation
and the accuracy of the message, promotes greater responsiveness to unexpected
communication challenges, and reduces the risk of errors caused by fatigue and
diminished processing capacity. It can be concluded that relay interpreting should not
be understood merely as an alternation of shifts, but as a collaborative practice that
enhances communicative effectiveness among the teacher, the deaf student, and the
class. In this process, while one interpreter is working, the other provides assistance
and support, ensuring quality and fidelity to the source discourse through interpretive
skills and strategies that foster teamwork. |
