Possessão, histeria, política e religião: revisionismo histórico-literário em Os Demônios de Loudun, de Aldous Huxley

Abstract

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a obra Os Demônios de Loudun (1952), do inglês Aldous Huxley a partir dos eventos ocorridos em 1634, na vila de Loudun, onde uma série de supostas possessões demoníacas e exorcismos públicos resultaram na execução do padre Urbain Grandier. Discute-se a interpretação dos fatos à luz de três momento históricos: inicialmente, contextualizamos a possessão demoníaca das freiras Ursulinas na vila francesa como fato histórico, conforme descrito por Huxley e por outras fontes. Adiante, discutimos, do ponto de vista da crítica literária, as implicações do gênero textual que Huxley utilizou, ou seja, uma obra não ficcional que faz um revisionismo para repensar a história convencional. Em seguida investigamos como a possessão passou a ser entendida como histeria em épocas mais recentes e como atualmente pode ser compreendida como psicoses e neuroses. Além disso investigamos os motivos históricos que levaram Huxley a resgatar esse fato e reinterpretá-lo. No último capítulo, apresentamos uma atualização da pesquisa, debatendo como as estruturas da política e da religião reverberam em pleno século XXI, através de totalitarismos, extremismos e fanatismos, correlacionando o atual momento histórico com os fatos ocorridos em Loudun, em particular com acontecimentos recentes no Brasil e nos EUA. Como problema de pesquisa temos: propor uma investigação, por meio da obra Os demônios de Loudun, como Huxley reinterpreta os eventos históricos do século XVII à luz do seu período histórico, estabelecendo relações entre as tiranias do Absolutismo e os regimes totalitários de meados do século XX, os quais, por sua vez, repercutem em eventos políticos do século XXI. Além disso percebemos que embora a obra seja não ficcional, ela faz uso de formas ficcionais ligadas aos modelos narrativos típicos do horror gótico. O não ficcional tem por base a descrição de processos jurídicos usados para legitimar acusações de bruxaria e possessão, mas, em diversos momentos da obra esse discurso adentra por caminhos ficcionais ao descrever sensações e diálogos, dramatizando os acontecimentos por meio de artifícios que remetem a eventos sobrenaturais. Com essa problemática e objetivos, queremos apresentar essa pesquisa que contribui para a área de Literatura, bem como sua atualização, para refletir questões históricas e socais atuais.

Abstract: This research aims to analyze the work The Demons of Loudun (1952), by the Englishman Aldous Huxley based on the events that occurred in 1634, in the village of Loudun, where a series of supposed demonic possessions and public exorcisms resulted in the execution of priest Urbain Grandier . The interpretation of the facts is discussed in the light of three historical moments: initially, we contextualize the demonic possession of the Ursuline nuns in the French village as a historical fact, as described by Huxley and other sources. Below, we discuss, from the point of view of literary criticism, the implications of the textual genre that Huxley used, that is, a non-fiction work that makes revisionism to rethink conventional history. Next, we investigate how possession came to be understood as hysteria in more recent times and how it can currently be understood as psychoses and neuroses. Furthermore, we investigated the historical reasons that led Huxley to rescue this fact and reinterpret it. In the last chapter, we present an update on the research, debating how the structures of politics and religion reverberate in the 21st century, through totalitarianism, extremism and fanaticism, correlating the current historical moment with the events that occurred in Loudun, in particular with recent events in Brazil and the USA. As a research problem we have: to propose an investigation, through the work The Demons of Loudun, how Huxley reinterprets the historical events of the 17th century in the light of his historical period, establishing relationships between the tyrannies of Absolutism and the totalitarian regimes of the mid-century XX, which, in turn, have repercussions on political events in the 21st century. Furthermore, we realize that although the work is non-fictional, it makes use of fictional forms linked to the typical narrative models of gothic horror. The non-fiction is based on the description of legal processes used to legitimize accusations of witchcraft and possession, but, at several moments in the work, this discourse takes fictional paths when describing sensations and dialogues, dramatizing events through devices that refer to events supernaturals. With this problem and objectives, we want to present this research that contributes to the area of Literature, as well as its updating, to reflect current historical and social issues.
