Taiwan, China e EUA: Disputa Geopolítica e a Indústria de Semicondutores

Abstract

Esta pesquisa investiga a complexa relação entre a indústria de semicondutores e as dinâmicas geopolíticas envolvendo os Estados Unidos, a China e Taiwan. Explora como esse setor tecnológico se entrelaça com as disputas de poder entre os atores e examina as raízes históricas da rivalidade que culminou no status geopolítico distinto de Taiwan. Os semicondutores, pilares da eletrônica moderna, transformaram Taiwan em um centro global nesse ramo, historicamente apoiado pelos EUA. No entanto, as rivalidades tecnológicas da China e EUA e a dependência dos atores em relação aos semicondutores avançados produzidos em Taiwan criaram um cenário volátil. O estudo argumenta que as relações entre os atores dentro da indústria influenciam significativamente as dinâmicas geopolíticas. O objetivo geral é analisar como as relações entre Estados Unidos, China e Taiwan, na cadeia global de semicondutores, influenciam as dinâmicas geopolíticas na região do estreito de Taiwan. Para alcançar esse objetivo principal, os objetivos específicos definidos foram: Realizar uma revisão histórica da relação entre China e Taiwan, com foco na evolução da sua separação política e no envolvimento dos EUA, a fim de contextualizar suas implicações contemporâneas; investigar a evolução histórica da indústria de semicondutores nos EUA, Taiwan e China, e suas relações nesse contexto; explorar a importância da indústria de semicondutores no cenário da disputa tecnológica entre EUA e China, por meio da realização de um estudo cronológico dos eventos recentes (2017-2022) que moldam a rivalidade tecnológica entre esses atores. Ao explorar essas interações, a pesquisa lança luz sobre as implicações geopolíticas dessa interdependência na cadeia de suprimentos de semicondutores.

This research investigates the complex relationship between the semiconductor industry and the geopolitical dynamics involving the United States, China, and Taiwan. It explores how this technological sector intertwines with power struggles among these actors and examines the historical roots of the rivalry that led to Taiwan's distinctive geopolitical status. Semiconductors, the backbone of modern electronics, have turned Taiwan into a global hub in this field, historically supported by the U.S. However, technological rivalries between China and the U.S. and the actors' dependence on advanced semiconductors produced in Taiwan have created a volatile scenario. The study argues that the relationships among the actors within the industry significantly influence geopolitical dynamics. The overall goal is to analyze how the relationships among the United States, China, and Taiwan in the global semiconductor supply chain influence geopolitical dynamics in the Taiwan Strait region. To achieve this primary goal, the defined specific objectives are: Conducting a historical review of the relationship between China and Taiwan, focusing on the evolution of their political separation and U.S. involvement to contextualize their contemporary implications; investigating the historical evolution of the semiconductor industry in the U.S., Taiwan, and China, and their relationships in this context; exploring the importance of the semiconductor industry in the landscape of technological competition between the U.S. and China by conducting a chronological study of recent events (2017-2022) shaping the technological rivalry between these actors. By exploring these interactions, the research sheds light on the geopolitical implications of this interdependence within the semiconductor supply chain.
