As aventuras de Terry Eagleton contra o pós-modernismo: um histórico do fronte (1981-2003)

Abstract

Nas duas últimas décadas do século XX, o crítico literário Terry Eagleton se destacou por suas críticas ao pós-modernismo, com uma produção bibliográfica que variou de pequenos artigos a livros inteiros dedicados ao tema. O presente trabalho procura traçar uma história desta crítica para avaliar seu desenvolvimento e melhor compreendê-la. Mostra como a crítica de Eagleton ao pós-modernismo está intrinsecamente relacionada ao contexto intelectual e político que marca os anos 1980, 1990 e início de 2000. Está dividido em três momentos que cobrem o desenvolvimento da crítica de Eagleton. No primeiro momento, explora o surgimento da filosofia francesa conhecida como pós-estruturalismo no mundo anglo-saxão e sua conexão com a introdução do termo pós-modernismo nos debates entre intelectuais. No segundo momento, analisa o enfraque-cimento do marxismo na virada da década de 1980 a 1990, bem como a irrupção do neoliberalismo e as consequências que esse contexto terá no surgimento do pós-modernismo. No último momento, centra-se na relação entre pós-modernismo e estudos culturais e a forma como ele se desenvolve nos EUA desde o final da década de 1980 até a virada do século. Abrangendo esse caminho, mostramos como o trabalho crítico de Eagleton está embutido nos debates que marcaram as humanidades no final do século XX.

Abstract : In the last two decades of the twentieth century, the literary critic Terry Eagleton stood out for his criticism of postmodernism, with a biblio-graphical production ranging from small articles to entire books dedicated to the theme. The present work seeks to trace a history of this critique to evaluate its development and better understand it. The workshows how Eagleton's critique of postmodernism is intrinsically related to the intellectual and political context that marks 1980´s, 1990´s and the early 2000. Is divided in three moments that cover the development of Eagleton´s critic. In the first moment, explores the emergence of the French philosophy known as post-structuralism in the Anglo-Saxon world and its connection to the introduction of the term postmodernism in the debates among intellectuals. Inthe second moment, analyzes the wea-kening of Marxism in the turn of the decade of 1980 to 1990, as well as the irruption of neoliberalism and the consequences that this context will have in the rise of the postmodernism. Inthe last moment, focuses on the relationship between postmodernism and cultural studies and the way it develops in the USA from the late 1980s to the turn of the century. Covering this path we show how Eagleton's critical work is embedded in the debates that marked the humanities at the end of the twentieth century.
