Racismo na Odontologia? Um Estudo com Graduandos da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina

Abstract

Os processos históricos pelos quais o Brasil passou têm impactos profundos sobre a forma como as relações sociais se dão na sociedade atual. Uma história marcada por períodos de colonialismo e escravidão resultou em desigualdades sociais e econômicas entre os diferentes grupos étnico-raciais, incluindo aquelas que se manifestam no domínio da saúde. Este estudo buscou avaliar se as posturas de estudantes de Odontologia, frente à discordância do paciente e a responsabilização pelo insucesso de um tratamento clínico hipotético, revelam elementos de discriminação em relação à cor/raça. Os dados foram coletados através de um questionário eletrônico autopreenchível, respondido por 166 estudantes matriculados regularmente entre o quinto e o décimo semestre do curso de graduação em Odontologia da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Apresentou-se um caso clínico hipotético aos estudantes em dois momentos distintos; no primeiro, o paciente foi caracterizado com a cor de pele negra e, no segundo, branca. Em ambas as situações, o caso demandava tratamento de um elemento dental idêntico, após o qual foram aplicadas perguntas abertas, cujas respostas são analisadas neste trabalho, por meio da Análise de Conteúdo Temática e de estatística descritiva. Os resultados obtidos sugerem a existência de algum grau de racismo entre os estudantes, uma vez que se evidenciou uma postura de menor respeito à autonomia e diálogo quando o caso se referia a um paciente negro, e uma maior culpabilização do paciente pelo insucesso do tratamento quando negro. Sugerem-se novos estudos com diferentes metodologias para melhor analisar o comportamento discriminatório, além de medidas que fortaleçam a discussão, o conhecimento a respeito dos temas e as mudanças na sociedade e universidade, como o fortalecimento e estímulo de políticas públicas que reduzam desigualdades raciais.

The historical process witch Brazil passed through impacted deeply on the way that the social relations happen in the actual society. A history of slavery and colonialism resulted in social and economical inequalities between different ethnic-racial groups, including manifesta-tions on the healthy field. This study intended to value if the attitude of dentistry students when a hypothetic patient disagree with the treatment proposed and if when the treatment chosen is unsuccessful reveal any discrimination elements related to the color\race of the patient. The data had been collected with a self-fillable electronic questionnaire, and it had been answered by 166 students regularly enrolled between the fifth and the tenth period of the Dentistry faculty of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. The questionnaire was presented with a hypothetic clinic case in two different moments, on the first the patient was black and the second white. In both situations, the case asked about the treat-ment decisions in a identical dental element, after that the student had to answer some opened questions witch the answers are the ones we ana-lyzed on this paper by a Thematic Tenor Analysis and descriptive statis-tics. The results suggest some racist level on the decisions taken by the students, once that showed a less respectful behavior with the autonomy of the black patient and more responsibility given to the black patient for the unsuccessful treatment. We suggest new studies with different methodologies to better analyze the discriminatory behavior, besides actions that empower the discussion, the knowledge about the subject and the social chances, such as the public politics.
