ARTE, PATRIMÔNIO E O PENSAMENTO MUSEAL EM ROBERT CHESTER SMITH

Abstract

Na primeira metade do século XX, inúmeros pesquisadores nacionais e estrangeiros percorreram arquivos e museus brasileiros. As temáticas de pesquisa eram variadas, grande parte delas se relacionavam à arte, patrimônio, arquitetura, principalmente a colonial. Dentre esses inúmeros sujeitos, intelectuais e pesquisadores envolvidos, utilizo como fio condutor o historiador da arte Robert Chester Smith, que estabeleceu vínculos de trabalho e pesquisa com os governos de seu país de origem (Estados Unidos), Portugal e Brasil apoiado financeiramente por instituições, como a American Council of Learned Societies, Guggenheim Foundation e Serviço do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (SPHAN). Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso é perceber a atuação de Robert Smith nos arquivos e museus, principalmente brasileiros, na tentativa de perceber o pensamento museal presente nas obras de Robert Smith e no contexto intelectual, cultural e político no qual estava inserido.

In the first half of the 20th century, countless national and foreign researchers visited Brazilian archives and museums. The research themes were varied, most of them related to art, heritage, architecture, mainly colonial. Among these countless subjects, intellectuals and researchers involved, I use the art historian Robert Chester Smith, who established work and research links with the governments of his country of origin (United States), Portugal and Brazil, financially supported by institutions, such as the American Council of Learned Societies, the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service (SPHAN). In this context, the objective of this Course Conclusion Work is to perceive the performance of Robert Smith in archives and museums, mainly Brazilians, in an attempt to perceive the museal thought present in Robert Smith's works and in the intellectual, cultural and political context in which he was inserted.
